After removing the first little visitor a few months ago, we got a few more over the course of winter... apparently they don't like negative degree weather. I bought steel wool and caulk and ran around plugging holes, only to find our crawl space for the house was not covered like it's supposed to be. The landlord put a piece of UNTREATED plywood over it, no mesh and tacked it up with small nails. Needless to say, with the rain and snow over the years it warped and has left a hole large enough that anything that wants free access to our insulation and air vents can have it. Mystery solved of where they are getting in. After cleaning up all the stored food I could find, putting all the animal food into mouse-proof containers and fixing things up I bought humane traps to catch them. And quickly found out how useless commercial traps are.

The best one I ended up with was: 1 spring mix plastic container top, one 13 gallon garbage can, 1 dab of peanut butter and a piece of spray millet. Put the PB on the end of the spring mix top, attach spray millet to the PB so it's stuck good and tight. Hang the spring mix lid over the side of a countertop or desk they can get up onto, counter weight with something small (I used a DVD) so it doesn't fall until they come to pull the millet off. Put garbage can under the lid's falling path. Put some paper in the bottom for a softer landing spot.

Caught 13 mice in 3 days and after plugging the hole and spraying it with fox (natural predator) urine (the things you can buy on the internet) just as an extra measure of protection, I am free from cleaning up their gross droppings and my bird is safe from their germs. And could have saved myself the $40 I spent on various commercial traps. :lol

Thought i'd share in case anyone else was on a search for a working humane trap like I was.

My little budgie friend Blossom just died... Her partner is all crazy... But it's ME that is the problem. I can't stop crying. She wasn't even my bird, she was my brothers. But when she got sick, my brother disregarded, I was the one who took care of it. But when I couldn't save her... I now cry, whimp and weep all the time. I think I am overreacting, but I can't do anything about it. My friends sometimes laugh at me, because I get all emotional and sad, when I see a poor, injured, broke, human or animal. I was to afraid to go with my dad to burry Blossom, I didn't say any last words. Not even goodbye. The only thing I did is touch her heart with a sour tear on my finger, when she was leaving our lives.
I am still crying for her.
Am I too emotional, is there a reason for me to be that sad?
