    questions on a pre-owned cocktiel

He had an elderly man for a owner, when the man passed on his wife did not want hime. I purchased him and have a few questions. When i try to cover his cage at night to help keep him warm, he throws himself to the bottom of the cage and hisses. He makes a fit the entire time he is covered. I have stopped covering him up is that ok?

Don't cover him if it scares him like that.
He'll be fine uncovered as long as you make sure he gets at least 10 hours of quiet time for sleep.

HIS NAME WAS BOB AND I DECIDED TO CALL HIM THE SAME NAME SINCE HE PERKS UP WHEN YOU SAY BOB.

HE WILL NOT EAT FRESH FRUIT OR VEGGIE'S. WHEN I PUT THEM IN A DISH OR HANG THEM, HE SITS AND HISSES AT THEM...HE DOES THE SAME WITH TOYS.

ALSO, DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHISTLING TUNES? HE PICKS UP REAL FAST, BUT I CAN'T THINK OF ANY TO TEACH HIM.

ONE OTHER QUESTION. WE HAD AN EARTH QUAKE THE OTHER NIGHT AND BOB WENT CRAZY. HE FEEL TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CAGE AND FLAPPED AROUND FOR OVER AN HOUR. I WENT AND TURNED ON A LIGHT FOR HIM BUT IT DID NOT HELP. I WAS AFRAID HE WAS GOING TO SCARE HIMSELF TO DEATH. IS THERE ANY THING I SHOULD DO AFTER A QUAKE TO HELP HIM CALM DOWN?

Please don't type in all caps, it's considered shouting.

He hisses at things because he's frightened.
Don't put new things in his cage right away, since he seems to be a more shy bird. Start with new toys by just putting them where he can see them. When he seems okay with them, move them OUTSIDE his cage(not inside). When they no longer bother him on the outside of his cage, put them inside his cage.

Let him get settled in(i.e. wait a month or two) before you start offering new foods to him.

As for the earthquake bit, I have no idea..we don't get earthquakes in Wisconsin.

    Re: pre-owned

About the earthquakes...we got small ones here in Utah. (We are expecting a HUGE one of at least 7.5, but the chances of that happening in the next 100 years is only 20%, so hopefully it won't happen). We have never experienced a strong enough earthquake to scare the tiels, so I don't have a lot of ideas about that either. You could try offering him his favorite things...etc...

    Good luck!
