A question on fruits and veggies.
Okay, Pooky is my first cockatiel and I was wondering if he could eat the same things as my other birds... (apples, broccoli, pear) Are there any fruit or vegetable he shouldn't have? Can they have kale and celery too?

Kale is good, celery is okay but has little nutritional value.
He shouldn't have:
Iceberg lettuce
Avacodo
Rhubarb
Too much spinach(it prevents them from absorbing calcium properly in high levels)

Also...don't give him any chocolate!

Re: A question on fruits and veggies.
Isn't that a basic thing for most pets? Not giving them chocolate I mean.

Re: A question on fruits and veggies.
I know chocolate is toxic to dogs, and I'm assuming the same is true for other animals as well. Makes you stop and think...why do we eat it?

Re: A question on fruits and veggies.
Right, if it's bad for them, it's probably bad for us too....
I remember the first thing I ever knew about having a pet was to never ever give it chocolate.

Dottie's cute but deadly =);.
And thanks! Pooky's now eating healthier, he loves his kale and broccoli.
Oh, but some statistics say certain chocolates can lenghten your life...

That's great to hear!!!
Yes, chocolate can prolong your life if eaten in small amounts, but it's definately not good for birds!

Hehe it's funny watching my pair trying to hold a corn on the cob in 1 foot and eat it at the same time without falling over
I keep telling them that they should stand on both legs abd eat it but they look at me as if to say that's too easy

Actually, in my reading I found that the cores of apples, pears, apricots, cherries, peaches and plums (seeds included) are potentially toxic to to tiels. (pg 50 The Essential Cockatiel . Howell Book House.1999,

This is a really old post, it's fine to look through the past topics but it would be appreciated if you create new posts for topics rather than bringing up the old posts
