    Tail feathers came out...

My female tiel, Juliette, lost all her tail feathers when my SO tried to catch her. They came off easily in his hand and it didn't seem to hurt her (or so he says.) She and my other two tiels have been molting lately. My question is, other than affecting her balance, will this cause her any harm? I know they will grow back, but how long does it take?

The birds are kept in a large cage (about 5' x 3') so they have ample room to stretch their wings. Juliette got out because the feeding tray wasn't closed properly, and she is very sneaky -- loves to get out. I've since bent the closure where she can't prise it open anymore. Any thoughts and advice are welcome! Thanks a million!

No, and they'll grow back in a few months.

i agree with everyone, coz i know! My tiel had her tail feathers (accidently!!!!!) pulled out. They do come out REALLY easily. No resistance what-so-ever, or i didn't feel any anyway. She was fine, could still fly, not really bothered at all. Just looked a bit "dumpy" for a while. It seemed to take a while for the feathers to start coming through, but once they did, they were fully grown in a few weeks. Really quick, you can notice the growth everyday! She'll be fine anyway. good luck!

They come out easily as a defense mechanism.

In the wild, if they'd been caught in a predator's jaws or claws by the tail, releasing the feathers would give them a good chance at being able to fly away.

It's sort of how some animals' tail tips will break off if you grab them....

Juliette's tail feathers are slowly but surely coming in! She doesn't seem any worse for wear since her adventure, and has sneaked out once more since the original incident!

I hope everybody has a wonderful holiday season!! My best to you and yours!
