Whats the best age for a budgie to be when you get one?

I'm getting a budgie soon and rang a breeder who said he had one 6 week old grey male.
Is this too young to be taken home?
    Will it be weaned?
I don't know what is the best age (and I don't know how he knows its male!??!)
    o
    Cheers!

Six weeks should be fine, but make sure that the bird eats on its own. If you trust the breeder, ask him to tell you (any good breeder would not sell you a bird that is not weaned). You can also check to see if the bird is eating seeds while you are there, although if he is nervous, he may not want to while you are around, so that may not work so well.

The younger the better if you want to train, so six weeks is a good age. As for the sex of the bird, it is only an educated guess. It's really hard to sex young budgies. If the sex of the bird is important to you, get an older one (a few months) whose cere colour has matured and changed. It will just be a little harder to train it.

Our baby budgies didn't leave the nest until about four weeks old, and some are still weaning (at 6 weeks)... I'd say 8 weeks would be a good age...

    Thanks guys!
The bird will be 7 weeks when I get him so I think that a happy medium don't you?
I just wasn't sure as the pet shops have older ones but I didn't want to get one from a pet shop.

: ) Well there are advantages to buying your bird from a breeder--and you will have someone to call when you aren't sure about something. Congrats on your new addition, and keep us posted.

    baby budgies

I just wanted to add that I got my baby the day after he came out of the nest and I checked with the breeder to make sure he was eating seed. This is a great time to get a budgie.
Definately the younger the better to train
All the best with your baby!

    Re: baby budgies

six weeks, the youngest maximum, but always opt for the younger bird, as opposed the the older bird. younger are easiest to tame.....although not so in my case. my boy custard is 7 months, 5 months when i bought him, and hes as tame as carrot (-bad example....) anyway, opt for the younger bird, and make sure his/her health is in perfect order
