Budgies mates for 3 yrs., female died, do I replace her?

My lovely Sherrie has died. She and her mate have been together 3 years, and she passed today, apparently from eggbinding. Should I find him a new mate? Should I get him a male companion? Or should he be left alone? I will miss Sherrie dearly, but I do not want Pepper to be lonely. He was alone the first 6 months I had him, and then with Sherrie for the past 3 years. I don't know what is best... for him to be alone, have a male playmate, or a new female mate. I don't want him to be lonely.

bbraven - I'm sorry about Sherrie. I replied in your other post in Breeding and and Mutations. I know you must be so full of sadness, so I just wanted to say again how sorry I am about your loss.

My personal preference would be to get another mate for your bird, unless he seems fine on his own (still eating and active) and you have lots of time to spend with him. Two males often get along well, and with a male bird, you will never have to worry about egg binding. Even if you do get another bird, I would still suggest that you quarantine the new one for at least 30 days, and take that time to tame the new one and get closer to Pepper. It's amazing how suddenly your relationship with your bird can change when it relies on your for companionship.

Just watch Pepper and see how he reacts to suddenly being alone. He may do fine. You never know.
