Cockatiel vs Conures Intelligence???
Are Conures really that much smarter than cockatiels?
Would a Conure and a Cockatiel ever get along?
Not housed in the same cage, but when out of cage together???
I saw these adorable Sun Conures today and I soooooooooo wanted to take them home.

Re: Cockatiel vs Conures Intelligence???
Cornure and cockatiel can get along (not in the same cage but they could have very closely supervised playtime together.)
However cornures are often carriers of a disease that doesn't affect them but could affect a tiel. I can't remember the name of that virus, but if it comes back to me I'll let you know. So you would have to be very very careful about that.
Cornures are also a lot louder than tiels . They have a very very high pitched scream that can be heard outside of a house so if you live in an appartement I strongly advise you agaisn't getting a cornure.
Sun cornures are very pretty and smart birds (I wanted one too... maybe one day...) but they are not one of the quieter specie of cornures (like green cheek for example). They also need a bigger cae (sorry I don't know what the minimum requirement would be) they need a different diet, but plenty of veggies too and they need a wide variety of destructible toys (Larger toys than tiels and they can chew through their toys a lot faster than tiels can so be prepared to lay down the cash!!).
You have to be prepared to give both birds proper vet care, so be sure you have enough money for that.
This is pretty much all I know for now, I strongly suggest that you do further research before taking a decision!!

Re: Cockatiel vs Conures Intelligence???
yeah, thanks for the help!
There's no way I could get a conure anytime soon, but this is the beginnings of my research. I plan to have Spike for atleast a year and a half before i bring home another bird (plus i live in a unit). I am definately going to get a conure within the next 3-5 years though i think.
I wonder do all kinds of conures have about the same amount of intelligence?

Re: Cockatiel vs Conures Intelligence???
My dad has had a sun conure for a few years now. She definitely makes her presence known!! She is VERY loud with these loud eekk ekks. Its very annoying. But i guess they are used to it by now lol! Chico(the conure) can say a few words, but they are not very clear. She is very destructive of her toys, but she seems to be able to keep herself entertained when no one is around, which is great! She sleeps in her happy hut by night, but come morning, she starts up that eek eek again. Beautiful bird, but sheesh very noisy! Good luck!!

interrsting fact : some cornures are known for sleeping on their back.
You uncover the cage in the morning and there is your bird, sleeping on its back at the bottom of the cage.
Very scary if you ask me!!!

My green-cheek and tiel
I first got a green-cheeked conure about a year ago and a cockatiel recently. They are caged seperately but get along decently while out in the same room. My conure will try to groom my tiel but get's hissed at and back's off. Anyways, my greencheek is rather quiet and very playful. Conures are known for having their own personalities. In my opinion they are a bit smarter than cockatiels. I have found my conure sleeping on it's back and it did scare me to death because I thought he was dead. But, conures are extremely playful and sweet and affectionate but do need alot of attention. Good luck if you ever get one and if you want a quieter and smaller conure try the GREEN-CHEEKS, they are great.

crappinconure - love the name! When I worked at a petstore, we had baby conures sleeping on their backs. Customers freaked out on us and called the Humane Society. Funny! I liek green-cheeks too. They are so cute.
Is there a difference between Green-cheeked and maroon-bellied conures? I've always wondered.

Digging up another Duddles post. hehe.
Breeders and petstores get green cheeks and maroon bellies mixed up all the time...BirdTalk puts it this way: "The green cheek has brownish-red tail feathers above, and the maroon-bellied conure has an olive green tail with a brownish red tip."

I have a sun conure in with my cockateils and he protects them. when I reach in to get a cockateil he reaches out like he is gonna bite me. So what do you think of that he watches out for his cockateils.

Re: Cockatiel vs Conures Intelligence???
I have a cockatiel and a green cheek who live together in a flight cage - but I would definitely say that they are the exception. My cockatiel is a boy (Sumo) and my green cheek is a girl (Aki). Sumo doesn't take any sh*t from Aki and I think that's why it works. They preen each other and they argue, but they get along fabulously. I will say, however, that if they were in a cage even a slight bit smaller that I don't think it would work.
In terms of intelligence...I'd have to say Aki wins that.

She can also spin, shake, and wave.
Sumo is a very talented singer but seems to lack the attention span that Aki has for learning tricks.... every individual is different though!

lol yeah i have heard this to. my friend recently had to leave her cornure, dezzy, at the vet overnight (it had hurt its beak but is fine now), and before she left she had to warn the vet that dezzy sleeps on his back under newspaper, and not to throw him out thinking he was dead!
