First Post: Questions about Mating and "Radio Static" screeching
Hi everyone!
I've only had my tiel for a few weeks and I'm considering going back to the breeder and getting his brother/sister (she wasn't sure of the sex yet). This question may be a little silly, but if I was to get him, and it turned out to be a HER, would the siblings mate?
Also, my baby is only 10 weeks old and does that "radio static" noise/head bobbing/mouth half open thing all the time! Is this from not being properly weaned? How long will this go on? I check his food & water bowls, toys, etc. constantly but he still does it. I spend tons of time with him throughout the day and talk to him. I've researched a bit and read that if he's doing it for attention, you're supposed to ignore him and only take him out of his cage/praise him when he's quiet again. That's so hard to do! lol... If your bird has done the radio static thing, does it eventually stop or did you do something to rid of the habit??
sorry for the complicated questions!

Re: First Post: Questions about Mating and "Radio Static" screeching
Hi. Does this static noise sound like its more screeching then chirping? If yes, then If he is hissing, with his beak open and (is he running away?) then thats an indacator to leave him alone becuase after all he's only been home for a few weeks. But the strangest thing is my tiel's only been with me for two days now and it loves spending time with me and its from a pet shop and it probably wasn't handled. So all birds are different. Don't worry, thtis "phase" will pass and he will love you! As for your mating issue, i'm not quite sure how mating goes for birds of the same family but someone else will be along to tell you.
Bye!

Re: First Post: Questions about Mating and "Radio Static" screeching
Actually, I believe the 'Radio Static' noise is quite natural for a ten week old. This is not a hissing, nor a screeching. This is a noise that baby chicks make when they are begging parents from their food, and are hungry. They will also bob their head of they are hungry. Is your bird leaving droppings, or have you seen him eating? If you haven't seen him eating, it's still possible he is when you are out of the room, but if he does not have droppings every twenty to thirty minutes, he is not eating. You will need to begin hand feeding him immediatly, and talk with the breeder asap.
Also, it is possible that he is doing this for attention, but I don't know about the head bobbing. Radio static, sure, but head bobbing usually just means he is a hungry little bird.
What have you been feeding him? Leaving in his food bowls? It would be best to go with what the breeder supposedly weaned him onto.
If he is eating, then the radio static is more than likely for attention, and sometimes they will grow out of it, sometimes not. I believe one owner on this site has stated that their 'Tiel continued to do this until it was a year old.

I believe birds, even in the same fmaily, will mate and that is why it is best to seperate them in different cages if there female and male in case of inbreeding which is cruel.

Re: First Post: Questions about Mating and "Radio Static" screeching
Hi,
I know for sure he isn't hissing at me, because I've heard his hissing... when I bought him a new toy he didn't like. lol He's also not angry because he will sit on my shoulder and cuddle up against my neck while making the static noise, and he's not running away.
He does eat and does poop so I know he's eating. It must just be for attention? Hopefully he grows out of it soon! I feel helpless whenever he does it. I'm not sure how I would rid him of this habit if it is for attention. Oh well, I still love the little booger. <3

why? it's harder to socialize two tiels that to concentrate on just one. if you want the tiel to bond to you, you should work with just the one. or do you mean replacing your bird with another? i would not recommend that, either. it's cruel. give the baby time. show him unconditional love & be gentle & patient. interact with him/her on its own scheule, not yours. s/he'll come around!

yes, they would. and you would have to go to the vet & put the feamle on hormones (birdie birth control) to stop procreation. not a good idea.

is he actually eating? have you seen him eat? is there food missing from the bowls? you need to make sure s/he is not starving. sometimes birds revert to an unweaned state and will not eat solids.

he's a baby who will most likely outgrow the radio static noise. while screaming should be ignored, i don't agree with that for a baby in begging behaviors. you wouldn't ignoe a crying human baby, would you? of course not! cuddle your bird if it will let you. be near it, talk calmly & sweetly. eat with the bird, offer it food.

i thought my muttonchop would carry the radio statci noise into adulthood. he did it for quite some time. be he did indeed stop. all of the sudden i realized he wasn't doing it anymore.
good luck! please ensure your tiel is eating & getting enough attention in this transitional time. he is used to having siblings & human interaction. keep us posted!
