    sexing a white face

Is it possible to sex a white face the same way a normal grey is sexed...by the banding pattern by the tail? We bought a white face at a bird show a few months ago and he is still too young and is just strting to moult but we were curious if we could sex him like that. Thanks for any info

    Re: sexing a white face

Keep in mind that nowadays with all the mutations (especially with the breeding of male pearls that retain their pearls) the only real way to sex a tiel is through DNA testing. But visual sexing is pretty good too.

Whiteface females actually have a lighter grey face. My tiel Sophie is a whiteface, you can see her photo HERE . Males have an actual white face, where the yellow in normal grey males do.

there is still barring and non barring, the differences are just in the color.

My white face (Apache) doesn't look anything like yours, I checked out you pic. I wonder is he is split to pied. He is mostly a light grey color and has a white patch on the back of his neck. I think he might be a male becuase he LOVES to sing and talk. He was about 4 months when we got him and after having him for about a month he picked up every tune and every word my other teil says. He is still young though.

I have a whiteface female and it had initially confused me because it took me awhile to learn that the females don't have whitefaces! She does have barring under the tail and has successfully hatched a clutch of eggs, so I am pretty certain she is a she! LOL

I would have to say right now Apache looks like your whiteface with the greay Christy, it must be a shadow in the other picture that makes them look so dark. What do you guys think about the white patch on the back of Apaches head neck? Is he maybe split to pied or is it normal for whitefaces to have patches on them. Thanks for the sexing tips, I will keep my eye on Apache to see if he is a she.

Ele's true color is the second picture. The first one I editted w/the colors and kinda goofed it up. I am still learning genetics and stuff, but I am thinking if there is a white patch on the back on the head/neck that it could be split pied. My Ele is all gray except for the white on her wings.

    Re: sexing a white face

I replied to your other question.
I see it is a Whitefaced Pearl.
I guess young, that would explain the tail feather damage.
Still a big ask! But if I went with the crest length I would go with female.
Seriously DNA test is the best way to do this.

Are these pics two different birds? To me they do look quite young. And I would agree with Clive that the best way to sex them (or one), would be to do a DNA test. A vet can do the test, or you can get the kits on-line.

No! If I see any difference it is the males that have longer crests.
But this is not a definite thing.
