    small batches of birdie bread!

Ok, so I have been making small batches of birdie bread for Darwin, and baking them in my toaster oven! He really likes it, but I hate making big batches, because he just doesnt eat that much on his own.

So, here are two great recipes that both bake in a small ramekin...

    ***The first***
    2 T yellow corn meal
    1/8 tsp baking powder
    1 egg yolk
    3 T mashed sweet potato
    10 peas
10 carrot pieces (about the size of a pea)
    1 small broccoli floret
    10 currants
    Dot of honey
and about a tablespoon of applesauce to get the right consistency!

    ***The second***
    2 T whole wheat flour
    1/2 T wheat germ
    1/8 tsp baking powder
    1/2 T hulled millet
    1 egg yolk
    10 peas
    10 pea-sized carrot chunks
    1 cut-up broccoli floret
1 leaf of baby bok-choy cut up into small peices
1 jar of all-natural sweet potato baby food

Both bake at 375 for about 20 minutes or so...until cooked through. Of course, any veggies would substitute in too.

    He loves them both too!

Oooh that sounds good! Do you think parakeets would like it too?

Barb, you could always freeze your big batches and just defrost little bits at a time!!

Hmmm..that sounds good, bet my birds would love it! Is there something you can suggest in place of the sweet potato baby food? I have all ingredients but that one - well I don't have wheat germ either.. My birds love bread and it would be great to make them their own bread.

You don't have to put the wheat germ in, its just a healthy kick! And a sub for baby foods could be applesauce or mashed banana too (but you might have to add a bit of water or juice to get the right consistency).

Cool, thanks Barb! I had a hard time finding this thread again. I guess that would be unsweetened applesauce, eh?

That would probably be the best. I just made some tonight and used pureed carrots with a bit of added water. Hopefully he will like it in the morning!

Whoa..talk about fast on the draw! Thanks..my birds love bread but I want to give them something healthier. I like the idea of small portions, cause when I freeze things, they tend to get freezer burn on them.

I have a rather dumb question but what kind of pan do you bake your bread in? It sounds sooo good and I would love to try some in my toaster oven but dont have a clue what kind of pan to make it in. I have heard people using those little muffin pans and also sheet pans but I am curious how you do it... thanks

Re: small batches of birdie bread!

I bake mine in a small ceramic dish called a ramekin (these are the ones for creme brulee). Here is a pic of Darwin with the bread too! He is too cute!

Re: small batches of birdie bread!

Oh Barb, thanks for the pic! I have one of those actually! Tomorrow is a day off for me, so I think I will make some for my birdies and let you know how it goes. I am sure they will be scared of it at first.
