    How to dye wood?

    Hello,

I know that the safe way to dye wood bird toys is by using food coloring. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to do this.
How much to dilute the dye?
Are all food dye brands safe to use?
How long do you let it sit in the dye for?
do you rinse it off after , or just take it out and let it dry?

    Thanks

    1. I tend to use an entire bottle of food dye to 2-3 cups of water, unless I'm tinting for something like orange or purple --then I just guesstimate it but use a lot of the base color (yellow, green, blue or red).

    2. Yes, all food dyes are safe. They're food grade and I've certainly never heard anything to the contrary.

    3. I let it sit in the hot water until it's obvious the wood has soaked up the color. That's usually 5-10 minutes, depends.

    4. I rinse off the pieces in a collander and then oven-dry them (temp less than 200F for 40 minutes, roughly). Make sure you do not let the colors touch each other, or pair up like colors, otherwise they will rub off on each other until dry.

    Hope that helps.
