    Question Crusty Beak?

Okay, to start off, I bought a male and female parakeet about 5 years ago, maybe more, well, the female flew out the door and our male died this winter when the cage door got left open, and our indoor cat got him. Before he died though, he developed crusts on both sides of his beak, and it looked like his beak was starting to crumble or chip off, especially the bottom one. We got 2 parakeets the day after he died, (another male and female) and this male is getting the same thing! They eat standard parakeet food, millet, have clean water and papers, and work off a cuttle bone. Oh, one other symptom is sneezing, and our previous one got lumps/crusts on his toes too. What could this be? He seems fine otherwise. When he sneezes, I just put him on the porch in the fresh air, and that seems to cure it.

It sounds a lot like mites. An avain vet can give you some medicine which will fix it .

It does indeed sound like mites, most likely as a result of a poor diet. If birds (or any animal) doesn't get all the vitamins and minerals they need it lowers their immune system making them more susceptible.

They eat standard parakeet food, millet, have clean water and papers, and work off a cuttle bone.
Fruit and veg play a big part in a birds diet so they need to be introduced to them. I presume the birds are older now so it may take a bit of time and patience to get them to eat them but they'll eventually get the idea.

They definitely need to get to an avian vet. Here's a link to help you find one. They are suffering either from scaly face or vitamin deficiency, or both.

i think this is happening with my birds too. its not the cere, but around the edges of their beaks it looks like its chipping off. i don't know if this is from biting on stuff in the cage or mites? they are on a pretty good diet so i don't know

    Re: Crusty Beak?

She also mentioned crusts on the feet, FFF, which makes it sound a ton like scaly face.

Cracker - If it's just around the edges of the beak, it's probably just from chewing on toys, etc. But if you're concerned, a call to a vet can never hurt.
