No brainer question (a.k.a stupid question)

I was wondering if getting hand fed cockatiel babies is better than ones that are not. Is it because they are more social and easier to tame? Sorry for the no brainer question but I just had to ask.

Do non-handfeds ever get as tame as hand fed ones, or is it just that it takes longer?

Parent raised birds can become just as tame and can be better pets than hand reared birds, it just may take a little longer and a bit more effort.

My Apache wasn't "hand raised" that I know of. She was petstore purchased and VERY skittish of me when I first got her, but now she's the friendliest of all the birds I have. She's an absolute love.

Alot depends on the bird's temprement to begin with, how young it is when you start working with it, and if its been abused if it was in another home before you acquired it. Many factors go into how tame a bird is, not just whether it was hand fed or parent raised. But.. as a "rule of thumb"... hand fed babies are more used to being around humans then parent fed babies (who have not been exposed much to handling). My friend is raising a brood of cockatiels who are "parent fed but handled". There's a difference. Because she handled them every single day but let the parents feed them, they're quite tame.

yeah, the bird's tameness is more a matter of the person, not the bird.

i have seen horribly abused & neglected rescue birds come around in shorter time span (with a savvy handler) than some hand fed babies (when given a novice handler who doesn't spend enough time or isn't consistent in the direction s/he gives the bird).

don;t fall into the trap of thinking that you have to buy a hand fed baby to have a great companion. or even a baby! i know plenty of adult birds who would make great pets!
