    Re: Masterbation

Well, I once had a budgie who used to do this by rubbing himself on the hand of whom he was sitting on! Most birds will probably try to masterbate at some point. They should not be told off for it, but it is advisable to discourage it. Some parrots can get quite aggressive when sexually frustrated, which leads to behavioural problems. Discouraging is best done by removing any toys that the bird may be attracted to (eg, a mirror), or if a parrot is trying to get your affection, simply turn away and ignore the bird. Don't reward them with the drama off verbally 'telling them off', as they won't understand. They are only doing what comes naturally, after all.

yes, ignoring the bahavior & removing things that trigger it is best.

never "punish" a bird. it doesn't work, anyway. chastizing for harmful behavior, but never for harmless ones.

Woody does the self-pleasuring thing too. I wouldn't be able to take away his masturbation aid without removing all perches... he's learned to flip his tail forward and just rock from there, but he pretty much only does it when he's feeling bored, so I just try to not let him get in that state very often.

Yes, never punish a bird, they don't work the same way dogs and cats do. Daniland is right in saying that you should just ignore the behavior and taking the things away that he likes to do this on most. I know it's uncomfortable to watch, but it's a part of nature.

Virtually all creatures or virtually all vertebrates? Well.... maybe also some of the arthropods.

    Either way, Yay for normalcy.

    Re: Masterbation

I find it a little strange that so many people find their birds masturbating, a problem. Ive read a few of the threads on it now. Its a very natural animal behavior,Almost all animals do it.
Although, I do wonder. If your bird masturbates on you, and you allow it. Dose this cause dominance issues?

... My whiteface cockatiel did that once, on my arm. I took him off and put him on the homemade perch. He hasn't done it for a few months now.

    Re: Masterbation

There's a cockatiel at our local Humane Society named Chief. I think (if I remember right) that Chief is like 14 or 16 years old or something like that. The HS had him for about 5 years, and he was a permanent resident there (not up for adoption). He apparently had some aggression issues that they'd worked hard to reduce, and although he's not as aggressive as he was, he can still be unpredictable they said.

They kept him in a cage with the door open all day for him to come and go as he pleased. When I went to say hello, he jumped on my hand and almost immediately started to masterbate.

Ok, so it's natural and everything, but it still made me VERY uncomfortable. I put him back on his cage, and he just jumped right back on me and continued. 3 times I would put him back, and he'd jump back on me to continue before I finally said, "it was very nice to meet you Chief" and off I went.
