Red face New Budgie, Boy or Girl?

Okay, I am not sure if this is a boy or girl here, I thought it was a girl at the pet store so we took it home. I've been to ever single pet store in our city and there wasn't ONE SINGLE FEMALE ANYWHERE!!!

First, let me say how disgusted I am that Petco's opening in our city has forced my favorite pet store across the street from it, "House Of Critters" to close out it's pets and become a fish store titling itself "The Reef." They are selling out all of their pets and only had four budgies left and not a single one was a girl. I wanted to scoop them all up and bring them home because they looked like four very lonely little budgies, such cute little budgies. I was sooo disgusted to hear about them closing out their pets because in the short month Petco has been here, they cut House Of Critters business down to nothing. So we are losing the best pet store in our city. So since they had only four budgies and all boys and Rebby needs another female to bond with, off to Petco we went. Grrr-!!!

We got to Petco and the first thing I saw that made me mad was that same Cockatoo was there and it was lonelier than before and had a really dry beak and cere and there was massive flake. The feathers around it's eyes didn't look so good either, not sure what the deal with it was but it was very upsetting. My daughter started crying because she wanted to take him home but I told her we couldn't and we were looking for a female for Rebby and we were on a mission but that I was calling someone about that Cockatoo because I didn't like what I saw. Off to the budgie cage and every single budgie in it was a boy. What to do now? One more option left.

We took off to Alaska Pet Warehouse. A big warehouse like store like Petco but they treat their animals very decent and we went there all the time before we discovered House Of Critters had the better nursery and prettier budgies. Into APW we went. First room of budgies nothing but little boys everywhere. Very disappointing. Off to the second room of budgies, every single budgie in there was a boy except for this particular one that I wasn't so sure was a boy. We asked the bird attendant if we could handle the budgie and get closer. She let us right in there after explaining we were looking for a friend for Rebby. Convinced we knew about budgies and were not freaks off the street, she let us in. We sat in the room with them for a long time before we spotted this little budgie and I asked her to scoop it up and pull it out so I could have a closer look. She scooped it with the next because they were scared of people in there with them. They were in an open aquarium tank and didn't like that we peered over the top so I stood back and asked to see this one.

Out came the net after several tries with the hand and she handed the budgie right over. I didn't want to hold it but thought I'd perch it on my finger after turning my back to the aquarium so it couldn't see the flock. It perched beautifully! Someone moved in front of the window to the room and this little thing flipped out and fell to the floor. People were staring through the window and waiting for me to grab it. I very calmly bent down and spoke quietly and gently pushed on it's tummy with my finger and it stepped right up, shook it's tailfeathers and cocked it's lil' head to the side and took instantly to BirdMommy! Well that was it, I was in love with this little budgie for being such a good budgie and so very sweet and well behaved, I couldn't believe it!

I went out and warmed up the truck and then came back in and purchased the budgie and covered it's little box with a blanket because it was snowing outside (we're getting 16 inches tonight) and I didn't want it to get cold. Well it had a fit when we covered that box with a blanket and just started hollering away and I just started laughing. When we got seated in the truck it quit yammering at us and was quiet except for an occasional bump or two. Every time we went over a bump, this little budgie really let us have it just squawking away.

Parked in the garage and came in the house. Ashlyn went upstairs and immediately disrobed and into the shower she went. I took the budgie from the box and put it in the shower to perch while she was in there with it. It was somewhat dirty from the pet store and we wanted it to be all cleaned up before meeting our little budgie babies. This new little budgie LOVED the shower! I couldn't get over how well behaved this budgie was. We got it all dried off and warm and put it into a smaller cage where Rebby was waiting. Rebby was very happy to see this new budgie and they began bonding immediately. After one hour together I took the new budgie out and Rebby had a fit!!! I only took it out for this short video clip because the flash on my camera is too bright, it blinds out the cere everytime I take a picture. The lighting in my daughter's bathroom isn't the best but have a look. Rebby was just having a total fit that I took this budgie out. This new budgie though was more than happy to get on BirdMommy's hand and kept trying to go up to my shoulder while videoing it so I had to work very fast. Ashlyn is ecstatic at how friendly this new little budgie is. She is so ecstatic she has asked if she can keep the girls in her room since she loves them both dearly. I told her that may be best at first because the boys have no idea about this new little budgie and this new little budgie needs to get used to it's home first. It's not the color I was after but it was the only budgie out of 100 that we looked at that even had the remotest possibility of being a girl.

If you pause the video when the budgie turns it's head, you'll may be able to see what we're seeing that might help you determine it's gender. The base of the cere is white and blue. half way up the cere in the middle by the nostrils is brown like the color of this smiley -

Would this mean we may have a girl? If it's a girl, Ashlyn has named it Isabella and is calling it Belle. If it's a boy, we are going to have to wait a long while before any girl budgies show up here in town.

    Fast Clip.
Pause clip when budgie looks head on at the camera, lighting not so good.
Make sure that your "View" is set to 100% or 200%.

Boy or Girl, what do you think?

This new budgie will be going to meet our Avian Specialist in one week, we've already made the appointment.

Congratulations! That's a sweet little budgie. I definitely think it looks female. She's very pretty. Is she part English? Her cheek markings are so huge! You sure know how to pick them. She's very calm.

Looks female to me too! She is beautiful! How fantastic that she is soo calm already! I think Bella will be a great name (means beautiful in Italian)! ;0)

And 16 inches of snow....wow! Where do you live again? Here in MN we haven't had one flake yet which is unusual for November 4th! But I'm not complaining! ;0)

Congrats on your new baby...I'm so happy for you!

Re: New Budgie, Boy or Girl?

That is a good question about her cheek markings, she looks big on the video but she is just a tiny lil' thing and she is a bit smaller than Rebby. She could be an English budgie and if she is, is it still okay for her to be with Rebby? We had Bella and Rebby separate from the boys last night but they kept calling to the boys something fierce and it was bouncing off the vaulted ceiling and walls in Ashlyn's rooms. It made for very piercing sound into the very late evening. So we took the cage the girls were in and put it on top of the cage the boys were in. Rebby made us laugh because she went under the newspaper in the bottom of the cage and tried to dig her way out to get to the boys underneath. Ashlyn had HUGE giggle fits over that. Rebby quit when I quietly walked up to the cage and said her name. She came right out from under the newspaper and cocked her head at me with a look that said, "Uh...yeah, mom?" Then she went back up to perch next to Bella.

Ashlyn is so happy to have this little budgie here. She is just excited beyond measure and when Bella sat on her finger here at home last night, she started crying big tears because she was ecstatic and happy that she had such a compliant sweet little budgie. She took Bella all over the house and just spent lots of time talking to Bella. I'm happy for Ashlyn because this helps soothe the pain of losing Rachel. And obviously Rebby must really like her new budgie friend too because she bonded with Bella immediately.

How cute what big eyes looks like a girl to me also. It's great that she's so tame.

She just got her second bath because she was on Ashlyn's shoulder and decided to try to fly to BirdMommy when she saw me. Her wings were clipped at the pet store so she didn't get very far, she landed in my daughter's bowl of chili. So we scooped little Bella up and gave her a bath and she's now drying off and cuddling under Ashlyn's hair all cuddled up at the nape of her neck. Ashlyn is in hog heaven.

OH MY GOSH, HOW CUTE!!! I'm so glad you finally found a female! I can't believe you had that much trouble, down here most of the budgies in the pet stores seem to be female. LOL but she is such a sweetie! The blue is just beautiful. I don't think she is an exhibition budgerigar. She would be much larger and heavier than the rest of your birds if she was. It's so great that she is as tame as she is. That makes it nicer for Ashlyn, doesn't it? I'm glad she is happy with the new addition. Tell her I think Bella is a perfect name too!

How did you make that video clip? That was neat.

Re: New Budgie, Boy or Girl?

I have a digital camera that does some audio and video so I perched Bella on my finger and then with my other hand held this bright shiny silver box in her face the size of a store-bought throw-away camera and took a quick video shot. I don't think she thought a whole lot of that shiny silver box in BirdMommy's face.

She is such a little peach though and she makes us laugh. I'm really wanting her to bond with Ashlyn but it would appear that every time she hears my voice she comes running. When she heard me talking and when I came into the room, she popped her little head out from under Ashlyn's hair and came running down her arm onto the couch where they were sitting and came to the closest point she could to where I was. When I put my finger down she hopped right on and shook her little tailfeathers and was very happy to see me. So I've told Ashlyn she needs to make sure she is the one to change the food and water and to spend lots of time with Bella talking to her and cuddling her so that Bella bonds with her. It could be though that since I was the first to perch her she may have a bit of a preference. Right now she is in the cage with Rebby and the two of them are happy together. The boys are in the other big cage together and I have to get ready for work. We definitely have to keep them separated because they boys are all "hubba hubba" over the new girl. Bella was getting really annoyed.

Right now, everyone is happy and the boys have paired up like always and even BabySamuel seems happier though he did spend some time running away from Rebby this morning who I swear was chasing him to plant a big one right on the ol' kisser. She gives him a terrible case of nerves. He gets so embarrassed around her and looks at me in total humiliation with a "rescue me mom" look.

The hubby comes home in one more week. Ashlyn wants to surprise her dad when he comes home from work and she doesn't want to tell him that we have a new budgie yet. She said she would rather watch the confusion on his face when we tell him we are going to give him CharlieBoy who has almost the same identical markings as Bella and instead we give him Bella. She said to watch the confusion and concern over what "has happened to CharlieBoy's nose" will be funny because it won't be blue anymore. Then we'll put CharlieBoy on his shoulder next to Bella and watch the smile spread on his face. He is thinking he is coming home to take her to go pick out a budgie and will be really happy that we have one already. And he's going to love Bella because she is so easy going and sweet.

Im glad you found a female budgei and one so sweet and calm. You sure are lucky! I just have one question and I hope you don't take offense but why didn't you quarentee her from Rebby? I know you take great care of yuor birds as is evident in your words but I was jw. Glad she likes the shower, at least you got past one hurdle.

Re: New Budgie, Boy or Girl?

I didn't quarantine her from Rebby because the pet store she came from takes really good care of their pets and birds unlike many other places. Though they were my second preference they are very good and very excellent. Very knowledgable about their animals and they do very well with the birds. Our little troop has an appointment with the vet this upcoming week and our Avian Specialist is completely aware of our new arrival and looking very forward to meeting little Bella. I don't think there is a need to quarantine her because I checked her out thoroughly myself and saw nothing in addition to watching her with the other birds for one hour before taking her home. We took a long time watching her and then checking her over. And she will get an even more thorough look-over from the Avian next week. Rebby is in dire need of a friend after losing Rachel. She has grieved and is ready to socialize and unfortunately the boys don't want much to do with a bossy girl. So I had to do something and do something quickly because she was losing weight. (posted that in the health forum) Rebby was so happy to see Bella and Bella was so happy to see Rebby that I left them together. If there is anything wrong with Bella who appears perfectly happy, chatty, playful and active the Avian Specialist will catch it next week. I'm a real stickler for taking my budgies into the Avian, we are always there. And I spoke with my Avian beforehand before I purchased Bella.

Okay, off to work for four hours.

What a lil doll! Its wonderful she's such a tame little thing! I'm glad for both Ashlyn AND Rebby that Belle seems to be "the one". Sometimes it takes some hunting, but the search paid off!

Re: New Budgie, Boy or Girl?

    Thank you.

I let them all out last night together to watch and see what would happen. What happened is Rebby is so posessive over Bella that she chased everyone away from her BIG time. They couldn't even come near Bella. I figure in a few days Rebby will calm down and realize that it is okay for Bella to talk to the boys.

Last night Ashlyn sat on the floor and did a jigsaw puzzle one-handed while she had Bella perched on her finger on the other. She was just ecstatic that Bella sat on her finger for the entire hour curiously watching what she was doing as well as everyone else around her. Ashlyn is just glowing with love, praise and adoration of her new little feathered friend.
