How do you travel with a cockatiel?

    Dear everyone,
I have a (probably stupid) quesiton -- how does everyone out there travel with their cockatiel? I'd like to take my tiel to a vet for a general check up and all the books I've read don't seem to mention how one actually gets from point A to point B with a bird in the car. The pet box that we brought Bubschein home in wasn't great -- there wasn't anywhere for him to get a footing and he slid around a lot. The bird carrier at the pet store was over $150. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: How do you travel with a cockatiel?

I use a small Kitten carrier that I got at Wal-Mart for $20. I line it with newspaper and Mattie has gotten used to it. It works really good because I can take the top off if she doesn't want to go in. I've seen people use the really small cages. You also can find cheaper bird carriers online or at different bird stores. Since you have a tiel you don't need a really big one and I've seen those priced about $75.
The big thing is that your tiel is safe! Make sure you can strap it into the car using the seat belt or something else. NEVER put the carrier in a front seat that has an air bag feature.
    Hope this helps
In loving memory of Mattie the...

We have a cat carrier that I use too. I got it for $22 at the pet store down the street. I line it with newspaper so he doesn't slide around while we're traveling. He doesn't seem to mind being in it too much. At least, while we are moving!

Re: How do you travel with a cockatiel?

yep, small animal carriers work great.

I happened to recieve a show cage at one time, and I use that. A small cage works if you have one around, but be sure to saftey pin a towel around it. The towl will help keep drafts out, and suddent air temp changes (such as in winter or summer, although I'd be more worried about winter!). They also help the bird from getting scared and freaking out, hurting itself. Sounds odd, but sometimes there will be somethingoutside that can scare them. Also, run your car, and have the heat or air already on before you put the bird in .

I got a small bird carrier at our pet store for 20$ I was surprised to find it was sturdy and durable. I just put Katie in there in the middle back seat buckled up. It worked pretty good.

I use a small bird cage and seat belt it in to whichever seat I put them on.

Re: How do you travel with a cockatiel?

I have a small cage, and I use a single perch in it rather than have them skidding around on the floor. they can keep their balance easily on a perch; no different than in a tree on a windy day!!! hehe. And I've also used a towel over the cage, as they can also freak a bit at everything flying past them!!

Re: How do you travel with a cockatiel?

I use a kitten sized carrier when its just one birdy. If I'm taking more than that, I have a smaller cage I travel with and I have perches in it. When I'm traveling with the kitten carrier, I put newspaper in the bottom and tie a sprig of millet "just so" to the side, stretching out across the floor and then tied to the other side. It makes a great temporary perch and something for them to nibble on.

Re: How do you travel with a cockatiel?

I also use a small animal carrier with newspaper on the bottom and a perch in the middle for Birdie to sit on. There's room for her to walk around on the bottom of the carrier as well. She does just fine on the trips to the vet and 3 hour car rides home from school.

You could always go to www.martinscages.com. That is where I got mine from and the prices are fairly cheap. The size of mine is 18 x 11x 11 and only cost me $27 (22 + 5 for special order) I use it when we travel.

Re: How do you travel with a cockatiel?

On car trips, I used to put Sam in a small cage (parakeet-sized; like those uber small things pet stores wrongly call 'cockatiel starter kits'), and seatbelt the cage in. We went to the vet like that and on trips from Indiana to New Hampshire. She was a good travelor.

We also put it between the seats of my dad's van once. She spent lots of the trip in the upper corner, head pressed against the top, just to get closer to us!

Other than that she was a good little travelor!

Of course if they're going on a plane flight, you need a small hard closed container that fits under the seat in front of you. Man, Sam hated that. But she would be good so long as she could see my shoes. If the shoes went away...she'd call me back desperately.

Re: How do you travel with a cockatiel?

I use the cage Buddie lives in. It can be a bulky ordeal, but it fits in the car and I have a rope tied on the top for easier carrying. I have a silo type waterer that I have to take out because if the cage isn't vertically straight, the water comes out and gets everything wet. So when traveling, I use a regular water cup. Buddie loves to ride. He'll be perched and eat his food while looking out the windshield or window. Real cute.

Re: How do you travel with a cockatiel?

Since I have a cage that I got for a single budgie (a long time ago and 5 birds ago), I have used that cage to travel. Beaky loves to travel in it even if we are going to the vet. I have a rather large car (1997 t-bird) and the cage sits perfectly between the front seat and the dash on the floor. That way, if the airbag should deploy, it would be above the cage and the cage would be totally protected (door on one side, center console on the other, floor underneath and airbag above). The only problem is that it would probably scare her to death

She sits in the cage, eats the millet I put in there and I have water for her too. She looks around and "talks" with me the whole time she is in the car.
