Exclamation My budgie will be living in the kitchen!

I hope this isn't a problem. I have read many things that say not to put the budgie in the kitchen, but that is wnere the family is most of the time. Comments?

I don't know much about it, but birds are not safe in anywhere non-stick products are used. I don't know if you have seen the teflon thread but there is a long list of products that cound contain PTFE (Teflon) which are not safe. The list is here

True. I read one site, though, and it said to make sure it is in a well trafficed place. It said she put hers in the kitchen, and they haven't been killed by harmful odours.

My house has an open floor plan...no walls seperating the kitchen, diningroom and livingroom. The birds are in two large cages on an outside wall near a big picture window in our dining room and I have had no problems. I agree though, make sure it is a well ventilated area. I love having mine right near all the action since we are always in this area of our house.

I think it does depend on what goes on in the kitchen. If you vent (to the outside) while cooking and cleaning then it probably won't be that big a problem. My birds are very near the kitchen (and it's open to the rest of the house) and there's never been a problem even when cooking with these awful old nat gas appliances.

We vent the area thouroughly every night...and we don't even have the bird yet! My cat has been living for 14 years with non-stick pans, and I read they are harful to cats, also. That probably means we vent the place pretty well

Remember that birds have much more sensitive lungs and smaller bodies than cats. You really should make sure that the venting is going to the outside (better yet get rid of the teflon pans) - most stove vents only circulate the air already in the house.

Our vent goes right outside- just checked. We also open one of the windows in the kitchen every night (Which is not near the cage.)

You leave it open all night? Isn't it kinda cold this time of year in Canada to do that?

Nah, not all night! Just for as few minutes to clear the house up. We live in Southern Canada, so it's pretty warm because we get Chinooks. Right now its just 0 celcius.

it's -12 here and I'm in southern Canada. You must be in BC close to the coast or something. It's definetely not warm enough here to open the windows at all throughout the winter. Boogie would die of hypothermia (not to mention me!). If you vent really well tho it shouldn't be a big prob having the bird in the kitchen, just try not to cook with the teflon. And make sure your venting WHEN your cooking, not just at night for awhile.
From the crazy mind of Candace....

Re: My budgie will be living in the kitchen!

I had trouble finding a spot for Snowdrop as well. Now, I've settled for putting him in a corridor near the kitchen, but not in the kitchen itself. We don't use non-stick pans, but we do a lot of cooking, so the bird is kept away from where the most activity would be. Maybe you can try putting your new birdy somewhere close to the kitchen, but not inside?

Chinooks only come down the east side of the mountains so she couldn't be near the coast
