Exclamation Tail bobbing or just normal movement?? Please help??

    Hi everyone,
Raphael has been bobbing his tail a tiny bit when he breathes, it no massive movement and the tail only moves about a mm, 2mm max. its the tiniest movement but its when he breathes, but not all the time, he is going through a moult at the mo, so i don't know if that might have anything to do with it?

He did have a bit of a watery poop earlier but he had just had a shower and been drinking from it so i put it down to that, they are back to normal now. He has been chatting normally and running and flying around as normal.

is this something to be worried about, or am i just being paranoid??

Is his tail still bobbing now or has it quit? If it's still bobbing, you may want to contact your Avian.

It's my understanding that a budgie tail bobs when it is working harder to breathe to get sufficient air. I can't think of any time when tail bobbing is good. Also, molting and growing new feathers take a lot of energy and is very stressful on a bird. I agree with Rhema about contacting your avian veterinarian. Sick birds try to hide their illness and can succeed quite well until it is too late. Often, it is tiny changes in behavior or appearance that signals a budgie is ill and needs to go to the vet. This forum has a thread with information on avian veterinarians. The link is:

thanks for the advice, i'm gonna take him to the vet tomorrow, the only problem is that i live in the uk and our vet is just a normal vet, there are no avian vets around here that i know of, but i'm sure they will be able to help anyway.
everyone please keep their fingers and claws crossed for poor raphael at the vets tomorrow

My apologies for not giving a more specific description of the info that's available when you click on the Tailfeathers's link in my previous post. The link in my post takes you to a Tailfeathers's page with links to web sites that list avian veterinarians. I think the first link for Toolady and the last link for Parrot Magazine list avian vets in the UK. Perhaps, you can find an avian vet close to you. If not, taking Raphael to a normal vet is the next best thing. Some normal vets in my area see a fair number of birds and have a list of avian experts they can call for advice.

Hope all goes well for Raphael tomorrow.

i'm taking raphael to the vet in a while, he seems ok at the mo, but his tail is still bobbing and he hasn't been quite right recently, so maybe just a check up to be on the safe side!!! i'd never forgive myself if something happened to him and i could have gone to the vet but didn't, so we'll see what they say!!!

I asked about this too and the vet said that some bobbing is normal. When they have respiratory problems, the bobbing will almost knock them off the perch.

Re: Tail bobbing or just normal movement?? Please help??

Raphael is much better, the vet didn't give us enough medicine and the infection came back a little but he's ok now, we've got some more medicine and he is much better than it was.

Also it was not only tail bobbing, his 'shoulders' where his wings fold, was going up and down loads when he was breathing, and although this happens normally anyway, they were moving excessively, but it all seems back to normal now, fingers crossed!!!
