I posted about our first new chick not being fed by parents a couple of days ago. After getting lots of support from this forum (Thanks, Nicole!) we decided yesterday afternoon to pull the chick, set up a brooder and try hand feeding.
The chick is still alive, and has grown already! We are feeding every 2 hours round the clock. He seems to be stronger, and more demanding with every feeding.
However, I do have some concerns, and hope that someone can answer a couple of questions. Between feedings, I have been online reading everything that I can find on handfeeding. Much of this is cause for concern!!
I understand that the crop needs to be empty, or nearly empty before each feeding. This seems to be working fine. I also read that NOT overstretching the crop by overfeeding is important, and that the chick pretty much will stop eating when he has had enough. This too, I can understand........
However, when I get to the charts that give a range of quantity that should be fed at each feeding for this age, I see 1-2 cc. My chick is eating just a 1/2 cc at each feeding, and the crop looks well full, and doesn't want any more. Now I don't know that I am sure exactly how big a full crop is at 2 days. I have taken some photos after the last feeding and was hoping that someone could take a look and let me know if this is indeed a full enough crop, or if I am being stingy with the food.... however, I am unable to post attachments, and don't know what to do to get permission to post. Any suggestions????
Really could use a few more eyes, (experienced eyes) to take a peek and see if we are doing ok.
