Unhappy Smelly Mucus All over Budgie's head

    All:

My older budgie, who has been getting injections of immunoregulin per liver issues, has smelly, dried mucus covering most of her head. It seems to be clear, but there are no other clues besides last night I saw two regurgitated seeds stuck to her beak. Has this ever occured with anyone elses budgie? If it was Monday, I would take her to my avian vet. But, it's sunday, and it's -10 outside and I'm not going to take her to any emergency service (because she is already under treatment and is very fragile). I think this may mean it's time to put her down...

Ew... icky. I have no idea what it may be, but I wouldn't put her down until you can have a talk with your vet on Monday. It could be nothing, or a side-effect of treatment.

    BuTcHBudg,

I have had a bird do something similar...but other than that, totally unrelated. I'm sorry, ButchBudg

    Poor little one!

What liver issues is she being treated for? I know that Milk Thistle does wonders for the liver, and really helps it heal itself. Depending on what exactly is wrong, it may be worth asking your vet about it.

I hope your bird gets better soon.

    Lee-Ann:

I originally brought her in for 'breathing' issues - she was making a wheezing sound upon exhaling that wasn't getting better. She has had a fatty tumor on her front for a few years now and I thought that was why. So, the vet told me that tumors like that are usually caused by the liver's inefficiency to break down fats, and that immunoregulin shots usually help them out. I remember the receptionist saying that two of her birds also have liver issues and that they are on milk thistle (and something else) and that does the trick....I wonder why the vet did not mention this? At any rate, after about 5 shots now her tumor has not gotten any smaller...and her health seems to be declining. She seems to be at the point where I just want her to be comfortable and surrounded by the things she loves - we'll see what the vet says tomorrow...

    Re: Smelly Mucus Update

Well, it seems that Budgie has a crop infection! Poor little girl...
She is staying the night at the vet's to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated and to start on anti-biotics. Not sure if this is related to her other issues, but I will know more tomorrow...

Thanks for all of your kind words!

    Emily

Aww, poor thing. At least you kow that she is in good hands. Crop infections are usually easy to treat. I hope she gets better soon.
