    Question Benefits of owning birds

I'm new here and have a question. What are the benefits of owning birds? I am a type 2 diabetic and I also just suffered a mild heart attack on Christmas night-Would owning a bird be beneficial to me? I'm thinking yes because they need to have a varity in their diets such as; fruits and veggies and such. I am also trying to change my diet to reflect these standards. I was thinking that if birds need these things added to their diets it would encourage me to eat better because I will have to fix/prepare things for them and I might as well have some myself. I hope I explained it clear enough.

We used to own an Australian Shaft-Tail grass finch woh passed away at the ripe old age of 12. He was hand raised and heand fed and thought he was human

Thanks for the advice in advance....

    Lynn

    Re: Benefits of owning birds

Welcome to Tailfeathers Lynn. I am also new to this board but I feel that I can answer your question in one aspect. I have zebra finches and chickens as well as other fowl. My birds are my therapy for a very busy and stressful life. They have a way of calming my anxiety and nervousness like nothing else. I think you are on the right track with the diet of healthy food though....that's reason enough for me to say...."Lynn, you need a bird or two!" Again, Welcome.

Hi Lynn and welcome to Tailfeathers.

So sorry that you suffered a mild heart attack and I pray that you are on the road to recovery!

Thank you so much for sharing a bit about yourself and what you are going through. I too am in agreement with Delana that birds are a soothing comforter. If you are now home a lot, you will be able to spend quality time with your new bird and get to know and train it. Let us know what bird you plan on getting.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are all here to help one another.

Welcome Lynn. I deffinatly have to agree, I find my birds to be extremly theraputical for me on an emotional level. Even just sitting by the budige cage and watching them interact makes me happy no matter what Im going through. I think its deffinatly a good idea.
