silly bird
i just got my cockatiel a couple days ago, and i notice that if he's sitting on his perch and i go over and start talking to him, he gets excited and climbs down to his food bowl and starts eating food, even if he just finished and got comfy on his perch. is their a reason for this, do they like to eat when they get excited LOL

Re: silly bird
birds are flock animals. they eat in the presence of other members of the flock. many birds won't eat UNLESS there is another flock member present. this means you need to spend time with your bird in the AM & PM so that s/he will eat.
this is normal, & a sign that your bird accepts & loves you! it just means you need to plan for that...

Re: silly bird
My ET does that too and when I go to sit by him he tries to feed me through the cage bars . I have been taking him out every morning to eat breakfast with me but it was just this morning that he actually ate peas. No luck with grapes, spinach or anything else for that matter. I bought something at the pet store that you cook up and can freeze. It has rice, peas, and some different fruits in it. But he hasn't eaten that either.
Also I would like to add that when I got my tiel he was already 4 1/2 months old. (I thought this was considered a young bird). He was very hand shy until I got him home and away from the large and very noisy parrots at the pet shop. The only way he would come out of the cage was to capture him with a towel, although once he was out he would sstep up on anyone with no problem whatsoever. Well, he made a complete turn around in less than a week and readily came out on my finger with the step up command. He's turned into a real sweety now and sits with me at my desk when I work, will call for me when I am out or the room for too long.
