Sexing my budgies
Hi all! New member here with a couple of questions about my budgies:
Firstly I would like some help on sexing them if poss. Bob I always assumed was male because he is relatively tame and doesn't bite hard. But at 3 years old his cere hasn't changed colour fromthe pinkish colour all my past baby budgies have had. Radish is an albino (with a strange irridescent green look to her front in some lights) and also has that baby cere at around 1 year old...
any ideas people?
Thanks for your time,
BlueGin

Re: Sexing my budgies
Male budgies will have a blueish cere...females will be brown or tan and can turn "nutty" looking (brownish) when hormonal.
If you have a white, yellow or recessive pied male budgie, the cere of a will be pink.

Re: Sexing my budgies
Thanks for the response Scooter, now I finally know what Bob is! He is a recessive pied. Radish is an albino... how the heck will I tell what sex they are? In general Bob acts like a male, quite friendly, gets bossed around. Radish pecks till you bleed and wont let Bob eat till she's full...
are these signs enough to sex them do you think? I wish I had known that the ceres didn't change on these colourings though, then it would have been easier to tell if I had a pair or not! lol

Re: Sexing my budgies
But if the cock is an albino, lutino, recessive pied or a fallow then the cock will never get a blue cere, the cere is then fleshy pinkish in colour.

Re: Sexing my budgies
Male Budgies sometimes display brown cere's as a submissive action, to show they aren't a danger to the other male's, and at times, the females. He looks very much like a boy to me

Re: Sexing my budgies
does it depend also if they are in breeding condition? or is it just the girls ceres who change when they are ready to breed...

Re: Sexing my budgies
Generally when a male budgie's cere turns brown, it can be a sign of testicular cancer.
