    Tree Branches

I walked my dog today in the city park (big park that follows the river that runs through the city- its called fish creek) and I picked up a few branches that were lying on the ground. I thought thye would make some nice naturelle perches for my budgies.

My dilema is that I know some trees can be poisonus... and I cant tell what kind of tree a tree is never mind where a branch! So how can I know if the branches/sticks I picked up are safe for my budgies!?

ps.. I know to cook them to kill any harmfull bugs or bacteria.

you can call the city parks department and ask what kinds of trees they have there. Also ask them if they spray their trees with pesticides.

I would actually wait for the summer when the leaves have appeared and you can identify the trees. I really wouldn't use any branches that have been lying around all winter on the ground decaying.

Also they have crews maintaining the parks. I've seen them come during the spring to trim branches and such. If you go to the park often you might be able to catch them and ask if you could take a small branch home instead of picking them from the ground.

    Re: Tree Branches

LOL Im acutally not suppose to take the branches, even the ones from the ground.
My parents told me that majority of the trees are birch and popular. Birch is not good for budgies, so Im not going to get any from the park. Not worth the risk.

Ill stick to buying perches... One of the petstores in the city sells willow branches, the budgies love to chew these. Only they are too small to make perches.

    Re: Tree Branches

Now that you mention it I think you are right, you're not suppose to pick then even from the ground. But don't worry! We'll never tell...

If the willow branches are too thin it's time to get creative. You could grab a couple of them and braid them or just tie a couple of them together for a branch.
