Re: my cockatiel wont stop biting!

Start by being less frightened, most birds just display with their mouth open as though they're going to bite, but when it comes to it they don't.

How have you been trying to tame him in the month you've had him?

The most important thing is not to pull away, this tells the bird that to get it's own way, all it has to do is bite (or look like it's going to).

You could try holding a treat in your hand, so it recognises that your hand = good, not bad.

    Re: biting cockatiel

You can't expect something for nothing, that's why you're bird's still biting

If you read through the cockatiel forums you'll find lots of threads on taming, they should help you a great deal (and maybe the budgie forums as the principles are the same).

Good treats... Usually people find millet to be the best, some birds have a favourite fruit or vegetable (brocolli rates highly with my birds). You've just got to test your bird and find out which it likes and which it doesn't.

    taming

I don't mean to sound offensive, but you should have learned more about "the birds and the bees" of cockatiel training. You can't expect to have a showbird in a month. Hissing is usual when you first get him and treats will only spoil him. Do you know his age? He could be going through adolescence at this time, or simply he could be freaked out by being all alone in a new place. Try sitting in a chair near the cage and talking gently to him even if he flutters around the cage or threatens to bite and hisses. Talk to somebody about your cockatiel but because of my experience, don't go to petco. Petsmart if OK if there's a cockatiel bird specialist. Don't take advice from Bob-Joe the employee. Or, consider going to a bird specialty shop and ask for advice, this is your best bet. Go to the Library (heaven forbid!) and buy some books about the subject. GL
