ooh! I did that with these little sparrows at my grandparents house! I was reading a book by the feeder, and one landed on my leg. It even let me pet it's feathers! All of them did! They ate from my hand and everything! It is quite an expericence.

I don't know if you tried this, but you can have your daughter put sunflower seeds in her upturned palm, with fingers together - often the chickadees will come and land on your fingers and eat the seeds out of your hand. If she was a little uncomfortable, she could wear gloves too. We used to go to this park/perserve out on the east end of Long Island and "feed" the chickadees...mostly they entertained us. Plus I think that the parents relished the few hours of silence the chickadees provided since us kids hushed up to get the birds to come to us

BWAHAHAHA! Sorry.. but that's the best laugh I've had all night! My daughter has ADHD so there's generally nothing calm about her! But.. what she does have is a huge love of animals and birdies. I think inately, they must sense it and know she's not there to hurt them. As I looked at the picture.. I can see the Chickadee studying her as intently as she was studying it. Maybe the Chickadee has ADHD too.

There seems to be a pair of them that are now hanging around our feeder. This afternoon, after I snapped those pictures, I went out and visited them myself. One very calmly ate at the seeder while its mate sat in a branch above, just inches from my face. I talked and said "chickadee dee dee" to them very softly and I could hear them chitter softly back and forth, but neither seemed alarmed. I was so close I could see the light glisten in their eyes and the wind ruffling their feathers. I studied every detail of these wild birds, up close and personal. OMG.. you should SEE how long their claws are!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its my hope to get them so used to us that they'll begin to take food from our hands. That would just be AWESOME!

ADHD chickadee....Hey, it even rhymes! Too funny.
Oh, I love chickadees. They are like little acrobats, and so friendly! I wish we saw more of them, and more chipping sparrows....^^

Wild birds are soo cool. A few years ago, when we had a bad winter, I would put out bird food all the time. One saturday AM I hadn't gotten to it yet, heard a ruckus on the deck and there was a flock of sparrows sitting on the deck, pressed against the sliding glass door, looking in at me!! They were wanting their breakfast, by golly!!
