Re: How long do cockatiels live

It ranges from 15 to 20 I think.

Of course it depends on how they've been looked after, fed etc. You've got quite a few years yet though

Your birds are so darn cute! Baby is colored exactly like SimSim.

I took SimSim to the vet this summer for a well-bird visit and the vet said that he sees cockatiels as young as five years old on the verge of death when they are on an all-seed diet. He says that the pellets lengthen their lives tremendously. The bird store where we had bought SimSim didn't explain that to us, they just sold us a big bag of seed. As I love him tremendously and want to have him in my life for as many years as he's willing to stay, you can believe that I hot-footed it to the bird store for some pellets mighty fast! He resisted the pellets at first but we discovered that he loves the fruit-flavored ZuPreem pellets as much as his seed. I try to sneak in the Harrison's pellets too because I'm not crazy about him getting all the sugar and artificial colors in the fruit flavored brightly colored ZuPreem pellets. But I figure they're probably still much much better than an all-seed diet for him. After he made the switch from seed to 50/50 seed and pellet, we noticed that he's more energetic and flies around more. Hopefully he'll never get the fatty liver disease that comes from an all-seed diet and which takes the lives of birds so early.

    Hello,

Would someone be so kind as to explain what 'pellets' are for me please?

I'm very interested in a food that can potentionaly lengthen the life of an animal

    Thanx a lot

    Re: :)

Pellets are an "all-in-one" food that you can feed your birds along side some seed, fresh fruit and veg.

Pellets only lengthen the life of birds because they're getting everything they need, if you feed seed and a good amount of fruit and veg then you will get the same effects.

Most birds are fed seed from an early age so it is difficult to convert them to pellet, but possible with a lot of time and patience.

The most recommended brand of pellet is Harrison's, being totally organic and free from anything artificial.

Are you certain that seeds and fruits/veggies are as good as pellets? My research hasn't borne that out.

From what I've read... Seeds are like junk food for birds. It's fine in moderation, but an all seed diet is not recommended by most avain vets. Mostly pellets, fresh foods and a little seed is a more balanced diet for tiels and can give them a longer healthier life.

    How long to cockatiels live

Our bird Cecil is 18 years old and he sings, talks, flirts with paper. He's as happy as ever. From what I hear, they can live as much as 30

Yay!! If I can plan on a good 18 years with SimSim, I'll be very happy mom.
