    Exclamation Help! Budgie is dying!??

    Hi,

I found a budgie outside in the street two days ago. I managed to catch her and bring her inside, and I've borrowed a cage from the RSPCA. She's gradually become more and more sick, and today I visited the vet, who gave her an injection (Ivomec) for mites on her beak. But tonight she's fallen very ill, and I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the mite problem.
She doesn't move much, she's lying at the bottom of the cage, head down and her breathing is "clicky". I know it must be a respiratory problem. But why didn't the vet advice me on this?
Will she survive the night?? I am at a loss for what to do. I'm trying to keep her warm, but it's difficult to keep a steady temperature as it's winter here now. (South Australia)
Please, does anyone have any advice for me? I just don't want her to die!!

Your new little budgie needs to go to the vet now. She is very sick. In my opinion, the vet should have picked up signs and symptoms of her respiratory infection just from listening to her chest and air sacs with a stethoscope.

Is the vet you took her to today a specialist in treating birds? If not, you may be able to find one listed at this Tailfeathers link, which is currently above your thread: http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/c...ead.php?t=4942

If you find an avian specialist in your area, call him/her about your bird. This is an emergency and the vet will talk to you and probably want to see your budgie tonight. If no avian specialists are in your area, call the vet who saw your budgie today about looking at your budgie tonight. Hopefully, this vet will consult with an avian specialist. Take the name & number of the avian specialist with you just in case.

To help your budgie while waiting to go to the vet - put a heating pad set on the lowest temperature around and slightly under one side of the cage. This arrangement is so the bird can adjust its body temperature by moving towards or away from the heat to the side of the cage without the heating pad. Keep the cage covered or partially covered. Your bird is probably not eating, but have food and water available on the cage bottom. Raising the humidity in your budgie's room will help her breathing so use a humidifier or vaporizer if you have one. Direct the mist from the humidifier or vaporizer away from the cage.

Best of luck with your new baby and you are great for rescuing her and providing her with vet care. Please keep up posted about how she does.

Thanks M&D Budgies, I'll do my best. No, she's not eating or drinking... I just hope she makes it. I don't think the vet I saw today was an avian specialist, so I'll find someone else.
Will let you know how it goes. Thanks again,
    Bubbles

I am so sorry to hear about this little budgie. Well done for taking him in. It does sound like he needs intensive care at an avian specialists. If he is not eating, he will need crop feeding via a tube to help keep his strength up, plus a nebulisation course to help get medicine straight into his respiratory system. Find an avian vet as quick as you can. In the meantime, follow the advice you have been given, and try to use a small syringe or similar to give a few small drops of water into the side of the beak to help keep him hydrated.

    Very best of luck.

The budgie sounds to be in very poor condition. He will not last long in that state. The only hope is an AVIAN vet. Even then, sorry to say but it could be too late. Is this a wild Budgie seeing that you live in Australia? Anyway, besides the vet, all you can do for now is try to keep him warm and keep his environment quiet and stress free. Sorry for the little guy.

    Unhappy Sad news

    Dear all,

It is with a heavy heart I must tell you that budgie died at the vet last night at around 1am. I took her to the 24 emergency veterinary clinic, but she was barely alive when I got there so she was quietly put down to end her misery. I have never cried so much in my life -and she wasn't even my bird! I guess by caring for her, even for two days, made me feel close to her, and now I feel so, so sad. :

I want to thank you all for your support, it is really great to see so many here who care about other people and their birds. This forum has been a blessing, I just wish I found it sooner!
Maybe one day I'll get another little feathered friend, so that I can keep in touch with you all.
Thank you again, it really helped talking to you.

    Best wishes,
    Bubbles

PS, I do not know if Budgie was wild or not, I put an ad in the newspaper, which has been printed for today's run too -I just hope nobody rings about her now... I'll bury her under a white rosebush in the garden, as she was mostly white only with a blue spot on her back.

I'm so sorry! I know how heartbreaking it is to lose a fid, even one you've not had very long. It was really great of you to try what you could to help her. Please, don't feel bad that you "didn't do enough" or "find her in enough time". You did a wonderful, humane and very caring job for her. I'm sure she knew this.

    Re: Help! Budgie is dying!??

Bubbles, in your heart, this little bird WAS yours, you took her into your heart, you loved her, cared for her, nursed her wonderfully, and helped her over to Rainbow Bridge with things she could not have had with out you. You helped her on her journey by giving her love, dignity and compassion. You gave her more than yu will probably ever reaise. Here's a little poem by an unknown author that I find tremendously comforting, and I think you too will get some comfort and understanding from it to help you through your heartfelt grief.

"I'll lend you, for a little while, a bird of mine, He said.
For you to love while he lives, and mourn when he is dead.
It may be six or seven years, or maybe twenty-three,
But will you, 'til I call him back, take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief,
You'll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, as all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there I want this bird to learn.

I've looked the whole world over in my search for teachers true,
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, I have selected you.

Now will you give him all your love - not think this labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call, to take him back again.

I fancied that I heard them say,
Dear Lord thy will be done.
For all the joy this bird shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run.

We'll shower him with tenderness and love while we may,
And for the happiness we've known, forever grateful stay.

And should the angels call for him, much sooner than we planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand."

Very sorry to hear that Budgie didn't make it. Please believe that you did all you could for her and I sure she knew it and thanked you for it. You took her in, made her last days comfortable, gave her the care she needed, and eased her passing.

From her coloring, she would not have been a wild budgie. Wild ones are emerald green with yellow faces and foreheads, black & yellow shell markings on their backs, etc.

Little birdies can tug on our heart strings, that's for sure, even when they have been with us only a short time. ((((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))
