    Question Do parrots dream?

Tookie, my plum headed parakeet, has been chirping softly to himself, while he is asleep. At least he is in position to sleep, head turned, and tucked behind his wing. If all is quiet, and I stop to listen, it happens in what is similar to human dreams. It will go on for about 10 to 20 seconds, stop, and start again for the same amount of time.
It really is sooo very sweet, if it is a dream, it sounds like a good one.
Does anyone have any similar experiences with their birds?

    Re: Do parrots dream?

Yes! Tini, my lovie, whistles and sings in his sleep...but usually only during the day. I have come to understand that, at least for lovies, it is a defense mechanism to keep predators at bay while they sleep during the daylight hours - since it makes them seem awake and alert.

I love when Tini does this - I find it so cute and endearing I hope that they are having pleasant dreams too

yes, i know birds dream (so do cats & dogs). my parrots talk, mutter, and chirp in their sleep. i haven't heard my tiel or budgies, but that could be that they are quieter & i don't hear them from another room...

It really is fascinating, it is very soft, and rhythmic. At first I thought there was something wrong, but after some observation, I realized what it was, or must be anyway.
I love it, I am going to try and capture it video, after I get it I will need some help getting on, or uploaded, but I can work that out later.

Thanks for the replies, birds are sooo interesting, I just can't get enough of them, and learning from them too!!

yeah my lovebird hums when he's sleeping...though if he's dreaming I'd think it's a bad thing lol...cuz I bought one of those comfy perchest the 'U' shaped ones... he climes to the top and sleeps or I assume he's sleeping then he falls every few hours....makes me wonder y he chooses to climb all the way up in the first place.
