Do Budgies have a nesting Instinct?

My budgies chew the paper at the bottom of the cage all the time. The last few days its been really really bad, as in half the paper is incinerated. Do you think this could be some sort of nesting bahavior?

It might be.. But i think they just like paper. My boys do it ALL the time! occasionally I will tear a small strip of paper and leave it in the cage for them to have fun with!

    Oh ok,
What do you use at the bottom of your cage?

I use newspaper under the grate and the Critters are forever trying to get to it! To take their minds off it when they get really into it I give them a few empty toilet rolls (unscented) or a few balls of printer paper and they have a ball!

I get the roll of woven palm leaves at the petstore and weave it in and out of the cage bars. All the birds go crazy over them and they're cheaper then the pinatas

Kiwi used to chew the newspaper on the cage bottom as a young baby so I startred providing him with shredded white computer sheets up higher in the cage to discourage him from going down there. Also, do you have a grate? I just put mine in for one day and they were so scared of it they never ventured down to the bottom again, even though I took the grate out the next day...lol! Now they never hop to the cage bottom at all, but then again, they are mostly out on their playgym all day!

My budgies love playing on the grate. I don't have a very tall cage, so they make the most of all the space they have. I also have a big bowl at the bottom of the cage for grazing (no perches above it).

The only downside is I really need to be on the ball about cleaning the cage

No, my cage does not have a grate, and its not possible to get one either. I use black and white sheets of newspaper, and depending on how they are, I somtime put computure paper on top of that. They go nuts on the paper! Im going to try putting some shredded paper in a food clip on the side of the cage.

WolfRyder. Is your palm leaves called shredders? I bought that stuff from the petstore the other day. Im afraid to put it through the bars though, Im afraid they will get tangle and stuck in it.

yes, the shredders. I have 8 budgies and 3 tiels and no one has gotten tangled

I threaded one end, tied a knot, then wove some more in and out, tying knots here and there. it doesn't take much. And the tiels started tearing it up right away, but the budgies took a couple of days to try it. you may have to show them how to play with it

My lovebirds and budgies love their shredders. I had to unravel the end before they'd play with it. Never had any troubles with them getting tangled. I keep about a six inch piece tied to their cage. It's not as messy as shredded newspapers!

Oh, I should mention that budgies DO have a nesting instinct, but you'll see that kick in when they find a little hidey-hole and start guarding it! Budgies lay in hollow trees and similar in the wild and don't use nesting materials to line the bottom or anything.
