Converting to Pellet and fresh foods

    Okay, so.

We got Gracie in early July, and she had been eating parakeet seed her entire life - and she is a tiel. She'd never had pellets or fresh foods at all. We tried all the methods suggested here at Tailfeathers to convert her, and she just wasn't having any. I think she swore at us every time we offered pellets or fresh stuff. I know she spit it back through the bars at us.

George came from the humane society yesterday afternoon, already converted to a diet of Harrison's pellets, fresh greens, and fresh fruits and veggies.

Today when we gave George his pellets we decided to offer some to Gracie. You would think they were made of chocolate, the way she's going after them! She's been eating at them all day!

Also, we gave George some parsley and cilantro in a bunch, and gave some to Gracie too. And some chopped apple. Gracie, little miss "If It Ain't Millet, I Ain't Havin' None!" has been eating it ALL.

I thought birds didn't learn to eat from other birds? Even if they do, is it possible for this to happen in less than 24 hours???

    I'm thrilled, but confused!

    That person is crazy!!!

THE #1 easiest way to convert a bird to new foods-have a birdie friend of his eat some .
This even works trans-species (well, bird species) .<-- did I just make up a word? Ooops...:o

    Good to hear! in

i think she was probably mistaken for the, often said, fact that tiels don't learn from other birds how to fend for themselves IN THE WILD (ie, escaped domestic birds will starve in the wild).... which is true, as the wild birds are different and eat differently and the food avalible in the 'wild' of whereever you live is usualy totaly different to what a tiel needs...
though in the domestic situation, a freind (be it thier birdie mate, or even just YOU) eating something often tempts them to try! we often suggest the owner to try eating the food (with much smiling and encouragement) and it often works; the tiel then give it a go!

Birds learn very easily from birds of their own kind.

The person who told you they "don't learn from other birds" was probably referring to wild birds.

A cockatiel that escapes into the wild is unlikely to know how to find food or what to eat, and does not learn by watching other birds.
