precious will sit on my shoulder happily but wont let me touch him.

Hi there, I have had my cockatiel for 3 weeks and I take him out of his cage 2 to 3 times a day for flying and training. I can get him to step up onto a stick or my hand but he doesnt want me to touch him. What can i do to help this along. I take him out at 5am in the morning and that is when I have the best luck at touching him but at the other times he is more awake and more agro. Has anyone got any ideas as to what I could do next to help him learn to trust me. At the moment he is sitting on my shoulder while i am typing this and seems qiute happy to stay there.

Re: precious will sit on my shoulder happily but wont let me touch him.

I'm no expert but my first tiel always was a little hand shy (he still is a bit, but that's because he's learned about breeding and it's made him less friendly).

Anyway, here's a few suggestions you might try:

Since you say he will step up on your finger sometimes I would suggest to encourage that more often and try to ween him off stepping up to the stick. The more interaction he has with your hands in this way the more he'll realize they wont hurt him.

Also, when he's sitting next to you on your couch, or in your lap get your hand next to him and just let it sit there, don't move it. Just let him get used to your hand being around.

You also may want to offer him treats and work towards getting him to take them dirrectly from your hands.

I've also hearn that when a bird molts he may be more likely to want you to touch him as he'd usualy have flockmates to preen him at this time, but I didn't find that to be too true.

Whatever you do, have a lot of patience. You've only had him 3 weeks and it may take some time, it's wonderful that he's already on your shoulder, i couldn't even get Hideki out of the cage after 3 weeks.

Also, some birds never like to be touched, but if he sits on your shoulder you may try nuzzling him with your nose. My boyfriend does this and Hideki loves it. It also eventually lead to us being able to touch him.

Great suggestions from TieDye. I too was going to suggest millet or treats that you could give him to get used to your hand and at the same time, maybe be able to stroke his belly.
