Exclamation Finch Egg in Food Bowl

There is a finch egg in a food bowl what should I do? This is a pair of zebras that are in a flight by themself. Should I remove it, just leave it there & see if she sits on it or move it to the nest that they have been built? The food dish is a standard dish that comes with bird cages measuring 1inch x 2 inch x 1/2 inch deep.

    UGGHHHHHHH!!!!

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

Well, isn't that convenient to lay an egg in the food bowl.

Seriously Andrea, I am not an expert on breeding and Finches in particular, but I am sure someone here who is more knowledgable in this area will come along and help you out.

Are you looking to breed these birds?

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

Originally I had not provided them any nesting material but was told they would get frustrated so I gave in and let them have it.

Dad is sitting on the egg and trying to build a nest around it. The mom looks like she is about to lay another egg.

Now that is funny Snackin' 'n' sittin' LOL!

I'd put another bowl in there for food, so they have something to eat. From what I understand, if you have pairs male/female, they'll breed no matter what you do.

do not remove the egg- that's where they want it to be. at the store i work in, many finches & canaries will do this- it's so annoying!

when they lose interest, then it can be removed.

There are now 2 eggs in the food bowl. I have left them since the dad was sitting on the eggs but I have put another bowl of food in.

Will they lose interest in the eggs. The mom doesnt sit on them alot its mainly dad, eating while he sits!

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

There are now 4 eggs in the food bowl and both mom and dad sit on the bowl. There really isnt much food left, just some empty hulls. Dad has added some of the nesting material that was left in the bottom and when he goes away, he gently covers them up until he returns. I guess mom probably does it too but I haven't seen her. She only started sitting last night on the eggs.

They do jump/fly off the eggs when I go to feed them. Will this hurt the eggs? Once they feel that I am done with them, they go back. I think that when they fly off, they move the bowl because it is always in a different place in the cage.

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

5 eggs and still looking like she is going to lay more!!!! I guess this is a good sign that they are fertile???? Mom and dad both sitting on the eggs.

It was cute that he nibbled on the food while he was sitting there, but now that there is mostly just hulls, he plays with the nesting material that he added to the bowl!

    Gotta love it.

Bored babysitter, eh? Wow is that bowl big enough for that many eggs? I guess I'm worried about splay-legs in the chicks.

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

I was concerned about the room in the bowl too so what I have done was I took a nest basket and cut the top off of it, placed the bowl in the bottom to the basket and added some dried grass around the bowl to secure it in place and they have since added more grass and covered the top of the bowl and somehow the eggs have stayed on top.

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

The eggs are doing great as far as I can tell. There are now 7, last one was laid last night. The eggs have all turned a different color (hard to explain the color) other than the last one of course. This is good right?

Mom and dad are both sitting on the eggs. Mom is already starting to regurgitate a little food, guess she is practicing.

My societies are now staying in their nestbox, when I checked yesterday there were no eggs, they haven't came out this morning yet so I have had a chance to check. Now with 7, Im still worried about the size of the basket, is there any point where I can move the eggs or after they hatch to something bigger? I have a wooden box designed to go inside the cage that is a long box rather than a tall box, I was thinking if they would go inside it I could move them but I dont want to cause them to abandon the eggs!

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

You have done great with making the basket. Dont worry, its enough room. Most likely, you wont end up with more than 5 chicks because that is a lot to handle for the pair. About them building around the eggs in the basket, yep they can do that... it surprises me too. When they build a nest and the hen lays the first egg, the nest isnt close to being done. As they lay and incubate, they build on to the nest and perfect it more.

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

I think that she has topped out at 7 eggs! Still sitting tight, she just got off of them long enough today to eat the egg I gave them.

I do have 1 society egg! Can't wait to see how many she lays! I hope they are fertile, im not sure if i have a male & female. At least now i know one of them is definitely female!!!!!! They will be harder to watch because they actually laid them in a box like I they were supposed too. Mom and dad (?) both have been in the box for 3 days now, only came out today when I was feeding that is when I took a peek!

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

I have a pair of Zebra finches that kept laying eggs in the food bowls because I did not want to breed them. I was tired of removing eggs from their food bowls. I broke down and got an open top nest. She has had 4 eggs. I removed all four and replaced them with fake eggs from a craft store. the male just sits on them for most of the day. He does not know the difference. Is this a little cruel? They seem to be forever waiting. I can't allow them to keep breeding. They have so many babies that I can not find safe and secure homes for all of them. Where do you place birds that are not in demand?

Re: Finch Egg in Food Bowl

I would get another male and another female and another cage. Pair the females together and the males together. Thats the only way they won't breed.
