    Budgie Rescue - Update!

Yesterday afternoon I went to the groomers to get our dog. After paying, I was putting his halter on (it's an annoying contraption, but it works for us) when I heard sounds of budgies!

I look up and over and spot 2 budgies in the absolute tiniest cage imaginable and said "What's this??" This was a dog groomers shop!

My groomer said a woman had come in and said "does anyone want any parakeets? My boyfriend said I have to get rid of my birds" and plops down this cage and leaves.

None of these women know anything about parrots or parrot care and one had called a friend to see if she wanted them.

I knew we can't handle anymore budgies but I just couldn't leave them there. I said I'd bring them home and put them in a clean, proper cage, give them some good food and clean water and perches and a few toys.

I'm pretty sure my groomer will take them. She's never had birds before and I told her I'd teach her what she needs to know and she could have the spare cage and all the stuff I put in there. If it doesn't work out, I'll need to find a home for them, as I'm only fostering them right now.

I'll prolly call the vet today and see if I can bring them in for a checkup too. They're about a year old (woman said she'd had them 8 months and got them from a bin 'o budgies so I'm guessing they were at least 3 months old).

They're in quarentine downstairs in a back bedroom with the door closed and a small heater in there (gets cooler downstairs than upstairs). They were shaking pretty hard from shock when I was getting them ready for night-night. This morning the little male is okay, but the female is still breathing a bit too hard for my liking. I'm sure it's stress, but I want to make sure. Their poops look fine for an all-seed diet and being trotted around outside with no cover by the girl trying to get rid of them. I threw my coat around them to take them to my car and into the house. It was biting but not bitter yesterday.

Oh yeah, the whole time I'm getting the new cage ready my daughter (8 years) was down there talking to them and expressing how upset she was with the woman for dumping them and keeping them in a small dirty cage with stinking stuff on the bottom of the cage, the bad food and filthy water. Her conclusion was the woman didn't know how to take care of birds! Yep, my daughter knows her bird care

    I'll get pics up asap.
I lost 2 hard drives yesterday and had to do a major reinstall and haven't reinstalled photoshop yet.

How wonderful Carol that you took them in for the time being. Looking forward to seeing those pictures, when you can.

Here's what the cage was like

    And here are the birds

They were pretty freaked out so I didn't want to bother them too much. But right now they're in the back room chirping up a storm

    They're so skinny! It's frightening.

I have a vet appointment for them at 2:40 today. Yeah, yeah, they're not mine, but they're still my responisibility while in my care. Besides I'm worried about the little white one.

Sorry to say this, but if it were my choice I would have gotten rid of the boyfriend and kept the birds. Poor little things -- bless you for rescuing them.

You have such a big heart. Thank you for taking in these little ones. I'm sure you will find them a great home if it doesn't work out with your groomer. Thank goodness you found them. The poor babies must have been so scared being surrounded by dogs. Why would the lady take them to a dog groomers of all places? I could never understand how someone could abandone their pets like that. I agree with Diane I would have told the boyfriend to leave.

all the groomers and I didn't have nice things to say about him but observing the condition of the birds, we also think she wasn't very thoughtful of the birds. They'll be better off with someone who cares about their welfare.

If that's the condition she kept the budgies in, they are definitely better off without her too. I think she could keep the boyfriend...they deserve each other. Good for you Carol...those two will make a wonderful addition to your "herd" 'cause once those two see what it is like to live in a proper "bird house"...they ain't gonna wanna leave

    woo carol! you rock!

frankly, anyone who would dump their birds on total random strangers because "her boyfriend wanted her to" doesn't deserve to have birds in her life & was a reckless irresponsible parront. i'm glad the birds are in better hands now.

Re: Weird Budgie Rescue - PICS!

hey! that is so awsome of you to take them in like that! I tend to be the same way, coming home with random, disbanned animals...ha! but yes, those two people deserve one another, and hopefully they do not own any other pets...just imagine the condition they could be in?!

if I lived closer to you I'd say I'd take the birds! Since I am looking for one to two more budgies...but ah well! hehe

can we see some pictures of the knew cage too? [like you showed of the old one]

God bless you for taking them in! If those conditions were the best that the previous owner could do it is best they gave them up. Lucky for them an angel came in and saved them!
