    Microwave Popcorn FYI

On a recent trip to our avian vet I found out that cooking Microwave Popcorn Bags is hazardous to birds. I hadn't come across this before, so just posting it for your information/feedback.

    Thanks for the warning.

Yes, your vet is right. Many microwave popcorn bags are lined inside with 'non-stick' surfaces. And as we all know, nonstick coatings, (heated or not heated, cookware or non-cookware), is often fatal to birds. It is important to be SO vigilant about non-stick, since it is in so many things now. As far as microwave popcorn goes, your best bet is just not to make it at all if you live in a house with birds.

Jeez. I knew that it would be bad to feed them microwave popcorn (because of all the salt and fat) but I never thought that there might be teflon in the bags. I've made microwave popcorn dozens of times, I'm lucky that nothing happened.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Well, not all microwave popcorn bags have non-stick coatings. It's just that nowadays, with so MANY companies adding non-stick to their products, it's hard to know what's safe and what's not. Safest thing to do if you want fresh-popped pop corn is to make it on the stove....but then you have to watch out and make sure your popcorn popper doesn't have a teflon coating on IT. Sigh. It's a lot of work, keeping up with these non-stick things...

I have one of those popcorn machines, where you throw in a load of corn grains, turn it on (don't forget the lid ) and bingo, a load of lovely, fresh hot popcorn. And the best thing about it is... there's none of the salt and fat and other bad-for-birdy stuff in it so once it's cooled down a bit, it makes a great treat. Harley loves it - he gets v upset if he sees me eating popcorn and he doesn't get any :yum
