    Sudden Parakeet death

I just joined this forum in the hopes of getting some info. I woke up this morning to find our little Sunny passed away on the floor of the cage. We have three parakeets (well, sadly only two now). I believe two were females (Sunny included) and one is a male. Yesterday, we didn't do anything out of the ordinary and the birds played happily and noisily in their cage all day. This morning Sunny was at the bottom of the cage with her stomach down and wings out a bit. Her head looked like it was a little crooked. She isn't the best flier and I was wondering if anyone ever experienced a parakeet dying by breaking its neck. Also, we had just cleaned out the cage the day before yesterday and the birds really seemed happier and healthier than ever. We are not going to get a necropsy as we have already buried her in a very nice place and I'm not really sure what that would show anyway. Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lisa
    We miss you Sunny!

Thanks for your kind words. It's been a tough day. I'm paranoid about the other two now. They both seem to have been affected. One (Archemedes, who I think is actually female) knew Sunny for much longer and is now just follwing the other (male, Happy) around all day. Happy was also much more snugglier today. My husband and I are both scientific people and it is just really hard to accept a death so sudden and without apparent cause. Thanks again for the kind words.

I am really sorry to hear of your loss. A loss of a pet is always sad.

I can't give you any insight into the death, but I would just keep an eye on the other two for any signs of illness.

    My condolences.

since they appear to share a cage, i would go to a vet & get the others checked out. the cage should get a thourough disinfection, and toys should be inspected- any unknown metal parts should be thrown out, frayed fabric or rope should be trimmed, etc...

I'm so sorry to hear about your parakeet. I had a close call with a sudden illness recently with one of my Budgies and it can happen so quickly!

In addition to what Squak and Howl has suggested, please keep a hawk's eye on their droppings - abnormailities (watery, only the white parts coming out) are the first sign of illness in most cases.

    Re: Sudden Parakeet death

parakeets can get ill and die very suddenly. i've had 13 parakeets in my lifetime and sometimes, you wake up and there they are, dead on the bottom of the cage. i've had a few freak parakeet deaths and sometimes...it just happens. since i know a lot about birds, i can usually tell when one is under the weather, but keets can and will hide their illnesses as a protective cover (behaviour learned in the wild), so sometimes it can be hard to tell when one is ill.

i've had this exact same thing happen before, too, and it's weird and frustrating when you don't know what went wrong. keep a close eye on the other birds. watch for any kind of change in look, behaviour, etc. take them to the vet if anything's suspicious.

i am very sorry to hear about your little friend. i know how sad it is. best wishes.
