    Lightbulb New Parakeet

I know this isn't the best picture. Her name is Sky and when we got her she wasn't eating. Apparently she wasn't weaned yet. But now she is eating seeds very well and down to one feeding a day.

Her crop was so full tonight there was no need to feed her. I have never seen her crop this full! She has gained a lot of weight and I believe will be good as new in a week or so.

If only she woudl eat out of the seed cup or off the millet spray but I am a patient person and I am sure she will eventually. I am going to offer her some veggies tommorrow and see if she will try them.

You can also try some soft foods, mashed eggs, potatoes, mashed veggies... or try baby foods that don't contain salt or preservatives- those jars are handy! Oatmeal is good too. Eat some of the food in front of her, and share- she'll be more likely to eat it if you do.

Have you weighed her? It helps to keep a record of their weight when they are so young-so you can track their weight and be aware of variances.

No I haven't weighed her but you can't feel her ribs so easily any more and her breast bone isn't sticking out as bad. Believe me we are keeping a close eye on her!

    Re: New Parakeet

Well when I got her she was starving and I had to handfeed her because apparently she was taken away from her parents too soon. So she is a lot more tame because of that. Believe me when I first got her she didn't want me touching her but she was too hungry for that to last.

    Re: New Parakeet

Looks a lot like Bonito...now I'm questioning if "he" is really a "he!" I'm fairly certain that "he" is.

About the eggs...how does that work? You hard-boil them and then wash them off and mash that up? Bonito has been on an all-seed diet thus far, and I'm reading a website at the moment that says the colored pellets aren't necessarily a good thing due to sugar content -- but those are the kind I just bought on Friday. I'm a little concerned about Bonito, not because of crop problems or food or anything like that (he's got a very healthy appetite) but because I'm about to start transitioning him in several ways, among them starting hand training and working on getting him to eat foods other than seed.

I read on that same website a good idea of giving him seed in the morning for about 20-30 minutes then changing that out with other items, and waiting for the results of his reaction. I'd hate to do this though and then go off to work and come back seeing that he didn't touch them because he wanted seed only. Of course I would immediately change out the food dish but still...

    Re: New Parakeet

sometimes young birds revert and need handfeeding, but only if they're pulled from the parents before completely being weaned or like Vader, he was sick (sore throat) and soft, mushy stuff was easier for him to eat.

I'm so glad Sky is gaining! I was worried about her! She'll fill out and be on those veggies in no time

    Re: New Parakeet

You were worried. I had trouble sleeping and going places because I was so worried about her! You should see her now though she is going all over the place in the cage and eating seed out of the food dishes now and not off the bottom anymore.

Her wings are different that your Skye though my Sky's wings are black and white through out not white on the flight feathers.

Thanks for all the information and help Carol!
