    poor francis

one of my budgies hurt herself today. we were eating breakfast as a flock, and the storm outside was pretty bad. the winds were blowing things around, and one crash scared her off her basket. she hit julia on the way down, and when we stepped her up off the floor, she was having problems with one of her feet.

after checking it out, she def. has a broken toe, poor thing! it's the small back toe, and it faces the wrong way now. it's also a little purpler than her normal foot color after all this time.

it's a sunday, so there is only one avian vet around, and i cannot see her- booked + emergencies. i talked to the (non-avian) emergency clinic and they thought given the info i provided about her condition that she'll be fine for an AM visit with an avian specialist (basically, waiting overnight to see her regular vet). i already called & left a message for them about bringing her in.

i feel awful about waiting- why did she have to get hurt on a sunday? but the last time i took a budgie to a non-avian vet they did a horrible job. so francis is in a hospital tank, with a heating pad. and PJ is mad! she wants her roomate back and yelled most of the day to get her back. i put them in view of one another, but still.

i'll keep folks posted. i have a long trek tomorrow (an hour each way), so hopefully the storms will subside...wish us luck!

Poor thing!!! Hopefully a vet can help. I know that when I broke my toe as few years ago the doctor couldnt do much. Obviously a bird is very different anatomy so hopefully it can be helped..or at least eliminate some of the pain!

well, we are back, and good news! there are no fractures or breaks- just soft tissue injuries! thank goodness

francis is recovering from her ordeal and resting now. she is getting phone check-ins with dr. ford in 3 days, 7 days, and a re-check in 10 days.

i have taken some pix of the ordeal, and they are available here!

Poor Francis, hopefully her little toe gets better soon... Dont you hate it that our birds seem to pick Sunday of all days to get sick or get hurt? Thanks for sharing the doctor pictures with us, it is so amazing how these doctors can work on such little patients. How cute that PJ got to come along with to the doctors too:-)

Awww, poor baby. I got all teary-eyed looking at the photos of the vets bandaging her foot. Such a tiny foot to have to try to immobilize!

    Re: poor francis

Those photos were very educational. Of course I winced when I saw the pain in Francis' eyes Poor little thing..hard to not get teary eyed.

I thought it was wonderul that you took both babies to the vet to lessen the stress. I did the same thing when I took Grendel to the vet at the end of the year. I know my budgies HATE to be separated as well!

I hope that sweet little girl heals soon! I had a foster dog that had a broken back leg. That little turd pulled her leg out of her cast THREE times. I was having flashbacks looking at Francis chew at her bandage. I wonder if they even make Elizabethan collars small enough for budgies.

    Re: poor francis

I just saw this thread! I'm so sorry Francis got hurt! I'm also glad it wasn't broken. I've had soft tissue injuries and broken bones and sometimes the soft tissue hurts worse.

Good, healing vibes your way so she can mend quickly

    Re: poor francis

Aww, poor Francis! I am so pleased to hear that there is nothing broken though. I am sure that sore little foot will get better in no time.

The pictures are great. I especially love the one where Francis is biting away at the bangage afterwards (not that it is a good thing, of course, but typically cute!). All that reminds me of how Banshee had his leg bandaged up the same when he broke it, and spent ages afterwards trying to get it off. We had to put a collar in on the end to stop him picking at it. I think that budgies cope far better with the collars that larger parrots.

Here is what he looked like all fitted with his collar. Cute (although such a shame)!

Please keep us informed on little Francis' progress. If she needs a collar, be sure to post a photo so that Banshee isn't the only budgie to have been subjected to the embarrasment over the internet.

    Re: poor francis

    update:

i have a call in to dr. ford, and am waiting for his call. francis keeps picking at her bandage & her foot. she has blood on her foot this AM, and she keeps mangling her bandages so they are not doing their job.

i carefully (fearfully) removed the bandage this AM to see how her foot was- half the time she "lame perched" the other half she was using her foot normally. she stopped picking.

so, if she still needs to wear a bandage, she will need a collar. if we can determine whether she she actually needs to wear one or not, that would put me at ease. i uploaded more photos to the album.
