    Foot Problem

I have a Budgie that is old ... 13 years old ... and over the past little while I have noticed that he spends more and more time standing on his right leg only.

Over the weekend I noticed that he does not stand on his left leg at all and seems to be in some pain.

Is there anything that I can do help him out ... I bought him one of those eronomically correct pegs to stand on but he refuses to.

I am kinda worried that he is in pain all the time.

    Thanks for any adivce.

    Hi Eric, and to Tailfeathers.

What is yout budgie's name? Congratulations on having a 13 year old budgie!

Regarding this problem, I'd suggest you get him to an avian vet to have this leg checked. It could be something very simple, like a sprain, which will heal on its own, but there could be something more serious going on.

Very often, if a bird presents with lameness of one, or both of the legs, and there has not been, to the owner's knowledge, any particular accident that could have caused injury, it could indicate that there is a problem going on inside. Any amount of swelling of something internal can put pressure on the nerves of the leg, leading to lameness. This could be an enlarged kidney, enlarged liver, a tumour, or in females an egg. Depending on the cause, your vet will be able to tell you if it is something treatable or not.

Where abouts in the world are you? We can help you find your closest avian vet if you don't already have one. Definitely take him along to get this seen to, just to make sure that there is nothing serious going on inside that is causing him to stop using his leg.

Best of luck, and let us know how it goes.

By the way, do you have any photos of your little one?

    Re: Foot Problem

yes, as lee ann says, it must be determined if the problem is internal, or actually with the foot/leg.

if it is a foot/leg issue, i would recommend cotten rope perches (booda is one brand), as they are softer on the foot that has to do all the work, and a fleece hut/hammock for rest. platforms are also a welome respite to perching all the time.

but please take the budgie to the vet to make sure there aren't larger issues. you will need to see a vet that specializes in birds- there is a link in my sig for the US & canada, if that's where you are...

    Re: Foot Problem

The vet said that it could be a variety of things; arthritis, gout or a tumor. We started off with some pain killers to see if that would help ... and it did ... he was able to put weight back on the foot.

That said, I am sad to say the Blitz passed away yesterday morning. He will be missed.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

I'm so sorry about Blitz. You obviously took very good care of him since he lived so long. My condolances.

    Re: Foot Problem

I am so sorry for your loss. I hate reading about someone who has lost their bird. I wish there was something that I could say to make it better but there is nothing that can take away that pain.
    So sorry,
    Jane
