    sick lovebird

Anyone have some thoughts and/or advice on helping my lovebird get back to good health? Last weekend he started wheezing, then became listless, sleepy, lost balance easy and pooped black. (his poop is back to normal color now, though a tad more watery than usual) The vet said he has a respiratory infection of some kind, so he gave me Baytril to give to TJ once a day. The vet also gave him a vitamin shot.
The vet instructed me to give him pedialyte to make sure he stays hydrated. I've event started giving him some sweet potato babyfood (for extra nutrients since my lovebird is a stubborn seed-only eater...I'll be changing that once he's well). It's tough giving him meds and pedialyte though...he HATES anything that isn't seed and hates being hand-fed anything.
I've been keeping him warm with a heat lamp (one that gives off only heat instead of light).
He's been on Baytril for three days now, and though he hasn't gotten worse, I've not seen any marked improvement either. The vet gave him a 50/50 chance of surviving.
I guess there were several factors that led to his illness. I mistakenly kept him in the dining area of my condo (close to the kitchen), and even though he's been healthy for 11 years, the vet said cooking odors, cleaning supply odors, etc cause damage over time, and something recently just sent him over the edge (made him really sick). I've since moved him to a quiet bedroom away from odors and perfumes).
I recently bought some roudybush pellets that I'm going to ground up and soften with apple juice to see if I can feed them to him via syringe.
What else can I do to help him? Any thoughts?

aww, I 'm sorry about your lovie. I don't have any advise over what you are doing, just keep in touch with the vet.

It's a good point though that even though we don't see damage from things we use in the house every day, their effects are cumulative over time. Sorry you had to be one to make that point. Hope he gets better soon.

I am so sorry your lovie is not feeling well, it is awful when they get sick. Did the doctor tell you how long it will be before it gets a bit better, maybe you should call them just to check in and tell them it has not been getting any better.
I dont know how or what to feed your bird, but I am sure other people will come and help you more then I ever could. I just wanted to tell you, I am sorry to hear your bird is sick, it must be so sad for you to see it sick.

black poop is not a good sign, it could indicate internal bleeding. is your vet a ral avian vet? in CA we have access to real ones- ones who only treat birds & are very educated. you may need a specialist. where are you in CA?

is the bird in a hospital cage/tank? keeping it warm? food & water easy to get to?

I am sorry to hear your bird is sick. I don't know if this bit of info will help with your situation, but I thought I would pass it on anyway. My lovebird became ill and I took him to the vet. He said Dinky had high blood lipid levels and gave me some medicine for him. I don't remember what his symptoms were. I had read somewhere that the spice turmeric helped lower blood lipid levels in humans and I had some so I would dip the tip of the syringe with his medicine in it in the turmeric and give it to him. A week later the vet said Dinky's lipid levels had gone down by half! He was amazed. Unfortunately, the damage to my sweet little bird had been done and he had a stroke and died in my hands. If the turmeric thing can help anyone, this is all I can hope for. Thanks for listening. I have to dry my eyes now. I miss him alot.

Thanks so much for all your good thoughts and well wishes. It's hard seeing my little buddy in such bad health: going from a chatty, cranky, sweet lovebird, to a silent, listless, fluff of feathers The vet I'm taking him to is an Avian vet. I'm supposed to take TJ back to see him next week.
So far I'm still not seeing improvement, though he's no worse. I miss hearing his happy twittering.

You're right. We don't think about the everyday stuff around the house, that may be fine for us, but is deadly to a pet be it bird, cat, dog, fish, etc...
Even though they may seem fine for many years, it will catch up with them.
