Exclamation Concerned about new baby Cockatiel

I have had lots of experience with Cockatiels over the last few years most of them rescues and one hand reared who was never any problem.

On Friday I bought a new 8 week old baby tiel who is supposed to be weaned but he simply doesn't seem to know what to do with seed and won't eat his veggies which I was told he was fanatical for.

I left him all today to see if he would go to the seed dishes and although he went for some water and went to the seed dish he doesn't seem to want to eat unless I sit there with a cup of food and feed it to him. I've given him egg food, seed and veggies and he just doesn't seem interested.

He also doesn't seem to move about much, just sits on his perch and nothing much else except chew a nearby toy.

When I take him out of the cage he'll eat if I feed him and chew anything in sight but I'm worried he's going to starve or become dehydrated... is there anything I can do to encourage him to explore his cage and eat from the dishes?

Has the person weaned him properly??

Thanks... a concerned owner of a new baby

take him to a vet NOW. babies need to see a vet right away. it's possible that the stress of moving regressed him and he needs to be hand fed again. but you didn't mention any begging behaviors, which should be there even if the baby was weaned.

the sitting like a lump is also a sign of illness, as well as mortal fear. either way, it needs to be checked out. lee anne (birdmad girl) is an avioan vet tech in the UK, and can help you find someone near you- she's in london).

btw, seeds and some veggies may not be a complete diet, depending on the quantity of seed to veggie, and which veggies you are feeding.

    Hi,

I took him to my vet today and he had a checkover and he's fine medically.

I rearranged the cage slightly so he could access the food dishes and water right off of the perches and it seemed to do the trick as he was jumping about / eating and drinking this morning before I took him so it seems he was just a little stressed about coming home with me and couldn't find the food dishes.

He does beg... everytime you touch him or go past the cage just like my other hand reared used to.

He is (or was) the runt of the clutch so-to-speak and does have a slight deformity to one eye and his beak twists ever so slightly but the vet said it was absolutely nothing to worry about.

She also said he might have been over-babied (if there is such a thing) whereby he was weaned by being fed seed by hand and thinks this is the norm...

Either way he seems bright and chirpy today playing around with toys and showing us his new found vocal ability

    Thanks for the advice!

    One very relieved owner!

Ok, not the best pic as it was taken using my phone but this is my wee baby Jellybean (with squeaky in the background gawking out of the window)

    Isn't he the cutest thing?

He's very cute. I noticed he's in the same room as another bird though. Have you quarentined him?

Yes but Squeaky was being nosey and slipped into his cage. The breeder Jellybean is from was highly recommended and I had him checked out at the vets and was told there was absolutely no risk for them to be in the same room although they should be kept in separage cages for now. I don't have a separate room I can keep the two cages separate in without one of them crying.

Yes he's a very cute little chappy who spends all night cuddled up with me watching TV and now laughs like a human when people are laughing on TV or in the house
