I know high pitch noise bothers my birds ears. Maybe the "ring tones" bother birds more than the music tones?

Re: ring! ring! its not for birdie!
None of our birds are bothered by our cell phones ringing. We only have cell phones at our house, but when we take Peaches to my mom and dad's house and the landline rings, he freaks out! He flies all over the place. He hates it! It's too loud!

Re: ring! ring! its not for birdie!
Funny, when my lovebird hears our phone ring he always lets out a "Cheep Cheep" with each ring. I know he likes it becuase it becuase he gets so excited after he cheeps that he fluffs and shakes his feathers. Now after it rings and I pick it up, all you know what breaks loose, he attacks it like it is his worst enemy... silly bird!

Re: ring! ring! its not for birdie!
I read they don't like phones because of the owner paying attention and talking to the phone not the bird... I have that magazine, I'll take a look later and see what I can find.

Yeah, I agree with David... I don't read Bird Talk anymore... they are full of birdie poo... I look through it though... Bill likes my cell phone... 1st it means that he gets a chance to talk lauder than myslef without me interrupting him - can't yell at him if I am on the phone, then he s attracted to the nasty red cover... and here is a personal part - he rapes it.... he gets ontop and grinds against it... hm... He doesn't care when it rings to matter what tone it is. He gets upset though if he was asleep and was rudely interrupted.

According to Bird Talk, they don't like it because it seems the owner leaves for the phone immediately in the middle of playing with the bird, so the bird gets jealous and hates the phone.

I wonder if birds will ever get the idea to sound like a phone to get their owner's attention.

I don't know about all birds, but my Loki already figured that one out. I used to have a weird ringtone that was a cross between beeps and whistles (really distinct, always knew it was my phone ringing..thats why I liked it) and Loki learned how to do it. Most of the time I leave my phone in my room because that's where I spend the most time. (Birds + computer = Heaven on Earth for Ashley) Every time I heard that noise I'd go running back to my room to grab the phone and never did it say I had a missed call or anything. Well one afternoon I decided to take my phone with me to see exactly what was going on. I sat down in the kitchen and waited. It took about 30 seconds but I heard the ring and looked down. Nobody calling. I snuck slowly up the hallway and opened my door and there was Loki, doing the ring while watching the door. I swung it open and he immediately stopped and said "Hey birdie" I laughed so hard...That's when I decided to change it to a band ringtone...I know for a fact he can't immitate the new one. Sometimes he still does the old one and he often tries to mimmic the new tone but I guess he knows that I know his secret ^_^

about phones-
it is speculated that some birds hate the EMF fields they emit. still others are jealous of the attention being given to something other than themselves!
my tengu mimics my cell phone ring to "call me" to her. she's a smart birdie, and knows i come running when i hear that noise! i am well trained!

i have found that in the last several months they have improved somewhat- they added trick training with tani robar as a regular feature, and i have always enjoyed reading liz wilson' column.
but i am not a huge fan of some of their other regular contributors. i call bird talk "bird porn"- fluffy articles and a centerfold!
i much prefer good bird and companion parrot quarterly.

Liz lives not that far away and I had a "pleasure" seeing her in person. I think she works with birds because people cannot stand her... She is a very rude person and will correct you no matter what you say or do even if you are purely joking. Like my login name - Bill the Crocodile, it's Bill's nickname because he tries to kil my mother and he is green, so it stuck, she gave me a lecture that he is misunderstood and I should not have a bird with my attitude... You all know me - is Bill not the center of my life? Does he spend the day located in the cage? God, even my mother who ended up 3 times in ER room because of Bill and had no ear at my wedding still lets him out (and hides), feeds him and brings him fun stuff when she sees it! I don't read her articles anymore because she tals about the same thing over and over... AND I DON"T LIKE HER (well actually Richard does not like her even more, and one of her regular clinets left her becuase she pretended not know him when she talked to me (he has 7 birds that visit her every months). That was like a year ago, maybe she had a bad time in her life or something...

I love those too!!!

Cute!
My cell phone's got a whistle programmed into it that I have set as the alert when I receive a text message. My 'tiels always whistle back when they hear it.

My mum's birds really, really, really hate any phone that rings, they fly all over the house crashing into walls, windows, each other, mum hurries to answer the phone, then makes who ever is on the other end wait till she can locate and account for each bird, to make sure they're all right.

i think i have heard that comment about liz, sally, and even me! not to dismiss what you are saying at all. i have found many "bird people" to downright weird, rude, or crazy. even the "experts"!
i have "ruffled quite a few feathers" myself. when animals are involved, people get very judgmental & huffy, ya know?

Yep, have to agree with that, strange as it may seem. I was once briefly a member of a bird club (which will remain nameless) and it still rankles to this day.

Re: ring! ring! its not for birdie!
Merlin is not bothered by the phone ringing. He does hate it when it (the phone) is "perched" on his spot though.
He does SCREAM at the coffeemaker when it beeps, and SCREAMS at the "Dave the Barbarian" theme song.
