    cages and aviaries

We would like to build an indoor aviary in our screen room to house our 2 cockatiels in the summer but, they would have to go back to their cage when weather turns cold. What effect, if any, would moving them back and forth between the two have on them.
Also, can the aviary be shared with a canary??

Thanks for any help on this one.

    Re: cages and aviaries

Hi Sally. Oooh, I'd love an indoor aviary! I wish I had the room for it!

I'll take a stab at your questions, but I'll have to say I'm not positive about my answers.

First, I tend to think it would be a big adjustment for your tiels to get used to a huge indoor aviary and then go back to a cage, even a large one. Is it possible for you to let them "play" in the aviary daily but return to their cages at some point during the day (perhaps even just to sleep)? Just a thought. Then again, maybe it would be no different than kids being able to play outside all summer and then having to go back to school in the fall - they'd adjust! My only other thought is that if they stay in the aviary 24/7, you might not be able to control the amount of light they receive. My understanding is that more than 10-12 hrs of light will signal their bodies to go into breeding mode and they might get a little hormonal and cranky.

Second, about the canary. I've seen quite a few mixed aviaries and, depending on the size of the aviary and the resources (food/water/perches) inside it, the canary might be okay. Still, he's outnumbered 2:1 and might get picked on.

    Hope that helps.

I don't know about keeping them in an aviary but I do know you should never keep hookbills with finches. All it takes is one bite from a tiels massive beak (compared to the canaries size) to break it's neck or leg in half.

    Re: cages and aviaries

Breeders I know move birds between a large avairy and cages when in and out of season. Aiviary in winter to rest, cages with boxes and a partner to breed. I have never heard any problems.
As for the canary, I wouldn't even try it. I see how easily my tiels tear apart paper, then I look at the size of a canary, and images of the aftermath pop into my head. Not pretty.
Good luck with the aviary, Im also planning on building one.
