new sun conure owner
hi
i'll be getting a 6 month old sun conure tomorrow and i have some questions.
1 i have 3 cockatiels and 2 lovebirds but they are all very young, will they all get along after sometime?
2 are sun conures a nippy kinda bird?
the sun conure will have his own cage just like the lovebirds are in their own cage and the cockatiels are in their own cage.
3 will a 6 month old conure get used to me and maybe bond with me?

Re: new sun conure owner
1. They may toterate each other, but should always be supervised when together.Or they may never get along...only time will tell.
2.I don't think they are as nippy as GCC's or MBC's.
3.Yes,a 6 month old is still tameable, and is still able to bond.
Don't forget to quarantine your new sun from the others fo at least 30 days.

Re: new sun conure owner
1. They might eventually tolerate one another. My breeder has all sorts of conures and P'lettes and they all seem to get along with one another.
2. Sun conures are such sweet birds...and they tend to not be as nippy as green cheeks might be. They are really great birds...but sometimes hormones can kick in...so be patient. Esp. their first hormone outbreak.
3. Both my suns are very bonded to me and each other. They love me and definatly love one another. I think they are the best birds as far as bonding to each other and their humans.

Re: new sun conure owner
I would wait until he has settled in to his new home and life.Give him at least a few days. And even then I would bring your friend to your house to meet your sun.

hi
do sun conures need a cuttle bone?
and do they need a mineral black like the lovebirds and cockatiels do?
and the cage that i have is 20 x 20 x 28"H" with 5/8" bar spacing will this be good for him he'll be out of his cage alot like my other birds when i'm home?

hi
also i was wondering about toys that are made of wood are they safe?
i noticed today that he broke pieces of wood off and i'm worried will he swollow any?

Re: new sun conure owner
The cage is too small. Suns really need like 36 by 24 by 30 cages, they're really active.
Wood toys are ment to be chewed up, so it's great he's chewing it.
As for a cuttle bone, I would only use a mineral block. My conure never has touched her cuttlebone, plus, they don't really help that much.

Re: new sun conure owner
Yikes! Now I'm thinking this cage will be too small for my Yellow Sided GCC I'm getting in a few days. The cage is 28 inches high, by 17 and a half inches wide, and 13 and a half inches deep (front to back). He/she will be in there by himself with the food bowls, swing, toys, etc. I do have a slightly larger cage, but it has 2 cockatiels in it. Oh well, my birds are out of the cages most of the time. I have a bird play activity thing set up that they play on. The larger cage is 30 inches high, by 23 inches wide, by 20 inches deep and has the food bowls, swing, toys, bells, etc. Oh well, I'll manage.

Re: new sun conure owner
my sun conure is molting and was wondering because he doesn't have another bird to preen him is there anything that i need to do to help him with his feathers?
he doesn't seem to like me to touch the new feathers that have like a waxy stuff on them.

Re: new sun conure owner
Jen, yes your cage is way too small. Green cheeks need atleast 24 by 24 by 30 cages. I would wait to get your bird until you can buy a more suttible cage.
Mary, that cage is too small too. Please get him a larger cage soon.

Re: new sun conure owner
Well I can't really wait because he's going to be here in a few days (already paid for him), so I'll just have to get a bigger cage. Until I get a bigger cage, he can stay in the 30 x 23 x 20 cage. Like I said, he'll be out most of the time.

Re: new sun conure owner
What will you do with the tiels?
If you order a cage soon, the cage you have would work, just not for long at all.

Re: new sun conure owner
I would put the tiels in my other cage, which is slightly smaller. They'll all be fine.

I agree on the cage size. Conures are very active birds, so it's best to go with a large cage whenever possible, unless your bird will out of his cage for literally a full day most days.
If money is an issue, you can get a reasonably large cage on ebay for around $100 with shipping; or you can spend more like $300 and get a huge one.

I'll get a bigger one soon. But yes, he/she will be out of the cage most of the time. My birds have plenty of freedom.

Re: new sun conure owner
Jen- They might be fine but put it in perspective...how would YOU like to be stuck in a bathroom-sized room for hours a day? It's not fair the the birds. Also, if you can't afford a new cage how are you going to afford vetrinary care for them?? A bigger cage really wouldn't be that much...please try to get a bigger one. I'm not trying to insult you or anything- try not to take offense just trying to let you know that a small cage isn't okay for a conure, ssince they are so active.
How big is the cage for the tiels? Just make sure if you are swapping cages to scrub them out real good before you set up the new bird in them...
Mary- same thing really... Get a bigger cage as soon as you can PLEEEEASE. Suns are much bigger then GCCs and just as active. I'm not trying to sound bossy to either of you, but I know a bird in a small cage is a miserable bird. Even if you can afford it time during the night and day, thats still hours during the day is has to be cramped in a boring little cage...
Again- sorry if i'm coming off as rude but cages are the most important thing in a birds life after good companionship...

Re: new sun conure owner
Because the bird regurgitated doesn't give any sex information. Both my suns are girls and Alliee will reg. for me and for Kira. It is more of a sign of companionship and that your bird likes you. The only way you can tell the sex of a conure is by getting a blood sample sent of to a lab and they will check the DNA. Or if "he" lays an egg.

Re: new sun conure owner
I'm looking around for a larger cage for my Yellow Sided GCC. I'll let you know when I find one. I'll give you the measurements and such. I think e-bay is nice and the cages are not too expensive. The cage he/she is in now is 23" wide, by 30" high, by 20" deep. My two tiels are in the slightly smaller cage. I like your cage parasiteeve9, did you get it from e-bay? How much was it?

Re: new sun conure owner
I just got my green cheek yesterday. She's a sweet heart. She trusts me because the day before I brought her home, the people let me hold her and all that good stuff. She took to me right away. So when I opened her transportation box she looked up at me and saw that it was me. And she just walked on my finger without a problem, I petted her and put her in her cage. So your conure should be just fine is it trusts you.
