    We have eggs! ...Again!

And, again, another batch of five. I'm almost positive that they're fertile, both because they were mating like crazy and to date all of Lemon's clutches have contained fertile eggs. Good odds, yes?

Let's see, recap time... it helps to predict the future, you see, and provides ramble opportunity. Their last clutch hatched summer 2004 and 4/5 eggs hatched, and all four of the chicks matured into healthy individuals. There was a pearl split to pied male (Yukito), cinnamon pearl female (Sushi), a gray split to pied female (Kenny/Kelly), and a pearl male (Demon). The parents are Pepper the gray split to pied male and Lemon the cinnamon pearl female. Yukito has become my close companion, Kenny belongs to my brother, and Sushi and Demon were sold. With this next clutch we don't plan to keep any of them.

For interest's sake, here's a comparison of the last clutch as chicks and with full plumage.

    Kenny:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../kennylook.jpg

    Demon:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...le/achick2.jpg (chick behind the one w/ eyes closed)
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...emonsleepy.jpg

    Yukito:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...e/yukfloof.jpg

    Sushi:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...le/achick2.jpg (closest chick)
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...sugarpiccy.jpg

Color predictions are always fun. In the past the most frequent colors are pearl, second pearl split to pied, third gray split to pied, fourth cinnamon pearl, and very rarely pied (2/20 chicks so far). This time around I'm really hoping for a pied (in which case s/he may be a keeper), but expect it to either be a clutch of three pearls/one gray or two pearls/two grays.

I have too much fun sometimes... I just love raising the chicks, and watching them develop their personalities and quirks. It's like this big, once-every-several-years-treat that is suddenly happening every year again.

    Re: We have eggs! ...Again!

Ok, with a cinnamon pearl mother, and the father being grey (split pied, i know) the father also has to be split to pearl and cinnamon or you wouldn't have gotten pearl or cinnamon babies... SO, dad is grey split to pied, cinnamon and pearl!
Also, to get the pied babies then the mum must be split to pied too. (btw, Yukito is pied too, just with less markings, but he's definatly not just split to pied!)

So, with that, the possibilities are:

    Mother:Cinnamon Pearl Split To Pied
Father:Grey Split To Pied, Cinnamon, Pearl
    13% Pied Cinnamon Pearl
    13% Pied
    13% Cinnamon Pearl
    13% Grey
25% Cinnamon Pearl Split To Pied
    25% Grey Split To Pied

That's the same for both sexes, except that all the male greys (normal grey, split to pied, and pieds) will be also split to cinnamon and pearl. But that doens't have any visual differences, and is only in the male greys...

    Re: We have eggs! ...Again!

Wow... thank you very much for clarifying the colors. I was confused why we were getting cinnamons out of the batch if Pepper was just a gray split to pied. You're right about Yuki, and so that means Lemon is more than just split to pied--she has a yellow crest/head just like Yuki.

    Here's the parents...

    Pepper: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...le/chick_2.jpg
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...le/chicks6.jpg (Excuse the mess)

    Lemon: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...lemmepreen.jpg
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...le/cchick9.jpg

Expect a deluge of photos, Oh Mowsie, once we get chicks.

We're up to six eggs now. This is a big clutch for her... usually there's only five.

    Re: We have eggs! ...Again!

Yep, Lemon sure does look like a lightly marked pied, but it can be hard to tell still!
And if she was a pied then the statistics don't work the same:

    Mother:Pied Cinnamon Pearl
    Father:Grey Split To Pied {X1: Cinnamon Pearl}

25% Cinnamon Pearl Split To Pied
25% Grey (males split to cinnamon and pearl)
    25% Pied Cinnamon Pearl
25% Pied (males split to cinnamon and pearl)

Now, I'm cheating with all of this, by useing a virtual breeder that works it all out for ya:
    http://www.kirstenmunson.com/cockatiels/blue.html

And I've found that NEITHER this or the first suggestions can be right, as there are ones that youv'e had that aren't on the list, SO there's something else going on in there, and I cant for the life of me work it out!!!

    You've had these babies:

    cinnamon pearl pied
    cinnamon pearl
    grey split pied
    pearl
    pearl split pied

Now I can get it set up to get all of them, but there's always one missing. I CANNOT work it out so that all those come out of that pair! I'll just have to keep working on it.... hehe!

Oh, it's hard to tell, but is Yukito cinnamon? Looks it in his pic....

    Re: We have eggs! ...Again!

Don't feel bad... seven years of breeding them and I'm still at a loss trying to figure out their colors. Those new percentages are a lot closer than the previous ones.

Unless it's obvious such as with Lemon, it's almost impossible for me to distinguish between cinnamon and normal. To me it doesn't look as though Yuki's cinnamon, but I think I've made it clear that I'm no color expert. Here's a couple more Yuki photos:
    http://www.gryphonemblem.com/yukilookatsky.jpg
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...august20_3.jpg (Baby photo )

It will be interesting to see which colors are in this batch. I think I'll do some experimenting with that virtual breeder thing as well.

We have a chick, exactly 21 days after laying. We heard Lemon fussing at us frantically for more food, and when we went down there she was pacing back and forth fussing, a newly hatched chick in the nest. Then shortly after we brought her the food she wanted, she switched to her "Get away NOW!" screams. And so... we obeyed. No need to upset momma bird. Give her around another week and she'll be indifferent to our presence. She doesn't mind my father, though--they're his birds.

There's nothing cuter than a wet, coin-sized chick peeping its first peeps.

    Re: We have eggs! ...Again!

I'm in complete shock. As of this morning we had four chicks hatched out, and less than an hour ago we discovered that #4 had died.

This is... horrible. We've never lost a chick before, and this pair has produced 20+ perfectly healthy babies. I don't understand what went wrong. The baby looked fine after s/he died--full crop, no injuries, just dead.

I hope nothing else happens. This is an unusually large clutch for them.

Aww! I'm so sorry to hear the news. We'll keep our fingers crossed for your babies. Sometimes, mother nature throws a curve ball. Perhaps it is just a case of mom and dad have a bit too much on their plate and now with the usual number, it will be a little easier to keep up. Hugs to you and I hope the rest of the chicks grow up strong and healthy.

    Help!!!

Thank you, Oh Mowsie.. trouble's not over yet, though. One of the remaining eggs had half the shell stripped away by the mother, and so we threw it out since it was rotting. The remaining egg is hatching... but it's covered in blood. The chick's been trying since this morning to break out, but there's still only a tiny hole, and it's filled with blood.

Should we try to help the chick hatch, or leave it? : I feel like crying...

The other three appear healthy, thank goodness.

EDIT: I don't think we're going to help it hatch. My mother said that it would probably hatch "retarded" anyway, but if it did, I would have gladly dealt with whatever problems it had... I'm so sad right now.

EDIT Again: To make this post a little happier, here's a photo from yesterday of the three healthy ones: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...cks_052705.jpg

    Re: We have eggs! ...Again!

I don't usually "OhmyGod", but... oh my God.

Next thing I know, I hear my mother yelling "Your father's cracking the egg." I run downstairs, and sure enough, there's my father trying to save the baby. After some blood and me watching closely, the assisted hatch was successful and the baby slid out. Right now it's in the nest and Pepper is (very cautiously) taking care of it. It looks fine, if a little deformed.

I know it's gonna die, but it'll be even harder now that it's hatched.

Please, please pray for this chick to live... or something, no matter how futile it may be. Whatever happened to raising chicks being fun? I haven't had this much heartbeak in a long time.

    Re: We have eggs! ...Again!

No one cares? Eh, well, that's fine.

The chick is weak but alive, although the parents haven't fed him yet. The other three are surrounding him to keep him warm while the parents refill their own crops. I'm trying to keep as close an eye as I can without causing Lemme and Peppe stress.

I forgot to mention what the problem was. Apparently the chick had begun to pip at one end, but then somehow got turned around and couldn't break out the other end. There was so much blood because the first hole was cutting into his backside. When we opened the egg there was a foot where we thought a beak was, and he slid out backward. Very strange.

Now let's see how long he lives. If the parents feed him, he just might live. If he does somehow make it, I'll make him into Yukito's companion. If not... well, that's life.
