Parakeet on my backyard bird feeder!

I tried to post this yesterday, but I guess it didn't go through...... so here it is again.

Saturday morning, around 11 AM, I looked out the window at my birdfeeder and saw a greenish, blue, aqua colored parakeet !! He was feeding
right along with the sparrows and chickadees. I just assumed it was someone's pet that got away and thought, " I have to save it " !

Well the first thing I did was take my two parakeets outside in their cage. I put them on our patio and they just started chirping away.
The parakeet was still on the bird feeder, but stopped eating and starting looking around, because he heard my birds.

My next move was to get my spare bird cage and set it beside my other one, with the door open and a dish of seeds. I thought if he flew over to see
my guys, he may venture into the other open cage.... well, about 5 minutes after I put the cage out, my neighbor next door decided to start up his
lawn mower and all the birds on the feeder took off. The parakeet hasn't come back. I hate to think what may have happened to him.

What do you think the chances are that he found his way back home? I kept an eye out all weekend, hoping he would come back.
I had my birds outside hoping he would hear them chirp.
Would he remember how to find the bird feeder again, or do you think he got so spooked that he just kept flying???

Hi Kathy... the weather is starting to get cooler. Although, over the weekend, when I had my birds outside, it was in the mid 80's. This week is supposed to go into 60's or 70's.

Keep an eye out for him and maybe you can get him. Did you look in paper to see if anyone is looking for lost bird. Many only place the ad for a week and then give up.

Wish you luck, the poor thing will not make it through the winter.

I checked the lost and found in our local paper.... nothing there. Who knows how long he's been missing. I really thought I'd see him again on the feeder.

Wild birds do come back to the same places they found food, I am sure he will come back if he can. The cage and your birds outside is a great one. Keep us updated.

That's the thing that worries me ..... he'll come back " IF HE CAN "
I'd like to try putting some millet out there .

Will the wild birds eat that too?

Yes they will. I put out pellets and seed that hit the floor and tray for the wild ones, everything gets eaten.

What an interesting story. I hope he is fine or he will come back to you and you will be able to catch him.

Re: Parakeet on my backyard bird feeder!

It's been four days. I haven't seen the little guy come back. It's still in the 70's here during the day, low 60's at night. Hopefully, he's okay.

I couldn't stop thinking about him last night. It was pouring out! If he's still out there, hopefully he made friends with some little chickadees or something.

I wonder what the possiblility of him finding his way back home is. I hope his owner knew enough to lure him back by putting his cage and food outside.

I wish there was a place that you could put something about spotting him. I am sure his owners would love to know he is still alive and could give them hope.

I thought the same thing. Only, I haven't seem him in days and I haven't see any ad about a 'lost parakeet' anywhere, at least not locally. I wonder how far those little things could travel... any idea?

If I caught him, I would defenitly try to find his owner!

Re: Parakeet on my backyard bird feeder!

Depends on how long he has been out on his own, they can really fly. From what I have seen on people getting birds back, they are usually within a few miles. But that is the one that are gotten back. I have heard of people getting them back after two months.
