Does everyone make their own rope perches or do you buy them?

    Re: Rope perch...

I always buy my rope perches. I believe the brand is 'Knot-a-Rope'

If you're looking to buy some, I suggest going through them. I've never had a problem and they offer a wide variety in sizes and colors.

    Re: Rope perch...

Buying them is safest because to make one it would be difficult to twist the rope tightly enough so your birdies toes don't get caught.

I will be buying them. Like Belinda said, I doubt it would be safe to make your own really!

    Re: Rope perch...

I heard somewhere you can make your own from dog rope toys, you just tie them in your birds cage. They are exactly like rope perches, but some of em are bigger. I was thinking of doing thia for my Budgies

I always buy mine, the're much more durable and hard. I think most of them have wire on the inside so that they are bendable and easier to move around.

    Re: Rope perch...

My birdies love their rope perches. Specially the ones that are like half a perch and they have fuzzy threads sticking out the end. Thats their favorite.

    Re: Rope perch...

rope perches are cool, I have a bunch. see my washer / dryer warning thread somewhere where I indicated to be careful not to heat too much as the ends will fall off from the glue melting.

also keep an eye on those fuzzy ends. I ended up cutting off ALL the thread as Sweety's foot got completely entangled in it and started flaying around like crazy. LUCKILY / FLUKILY I was home and immediately grabbed her firmly from freaking out and breaking anything and had to unknot all those threads from around her foot and leg. I don't trust those ends at all , personal opinion.

That's some impressive damage!! I'm glad my little birdies can't do that, they would get very expensive.

    Re: Rope perch...

I went to a $2 store and bought a dog toy rope ball/long handle that you are meant to use to play biting games or something and unravelled it. I cut off a piece and put it in their cage and they LOVE it. The rest i strung from door top to door top and it's their favourite place out of the cage. And all for $2!!!!!

    Re: Rope perch...

The rope perches are terrific! You have to work a little harder at cleaning them if/when they get pooped up, but they're a great addition to wood perches, easier on the feet, and fun for the birds to climb. You can put them in all sorts of weird bendy positions so its more similar to branches in the wild.

A word of caution, keep an eye on them and if/when your birds shred the ends of the perches or the perch itself always closely cut the threads off. You don't want any loose threads that toenails or legs can get caught in!

I wouldn't make your own. Its actually more like thread than rope, and its wound REALLY tight. I got mine for about $6 and its lasted years with a destructive budgie.

Substituting dog toys isn't a great idea. The savings sound nice, but even that rope isn't wound tight enough to be safe for tiny budgie nails. Its just not worth the few dollars for your birds' safety. I don't mean to be a downer... I just lost my feathered friend of 7 years last week to an accident and feel that there's enough stuff our little guys can get injured with without adding more to their environment for sake of saving a few dollars.

Goodluck! Get the perch, you'll LOVE it!
