    Xylitol WARNING please read

I have just posted this on the end of another thread about Xylitol, but to reach more people, especially those with dogs, I will post it here too. Hope that's OK.

I had to take my dog to the vet this afternoon.
My otherwise healthy 8 year old dog is now fighting for his life.
He stole some flapjacks I had made using Xylitol and his liver has been damaged in less than 24 hours. IT IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS FOR DOGS. I had no idea it could pose any problem until I googled 'Xylitol dogs' this morning when my little Brack was still looking peeky. I was shocked at what I found.
Please, please, please tell anyone you know with dogs, that this totaly natural 'heaven sent' for humans product, can kill your dog. (Even in small amounts).

I don't know if Brack is going to make it...

    Re: Xylitol WARNING please read

    Linda,

I am so sorry to hear about your dog, Brack. I hope he will fully recover. You must be so worried. Please keep us posted as to how he is doing. This 'harmless' sweetener is a very real threat to a dog's health. I found some information as well-- Xylitol definitely needs to be kept away from dogs.

Xylitol, also called wood sugar or birch sugar, is a five-carbon sugar alcohol that is used as a sugar substitute. It can be extracted from birch, raspberries, plums, and corn and is primarily produced in China.

Xylitol, like most sugar alcohols, can have a mild laxative effect at high doses. It has no known toxicity, though; people have consumed as much as 400 grams daily for long periods with no apparent ill effects.[citation needed]

For canines, however, xylitol can cause serious – possibly life-threatening – problems. Dogs ingesting large amounts of products sweetened with xylitol may have a sudden drop in blood sugar, resulting in loss of coordination, depression and seizures within 30 minutes of consumption. [10]

In rare cases, xylitol ingestion has been associated with acute hepatic (liver) failure and coagulopathy (failure of blood clotting) in dogs. [11]

    Re: Xylitol WARNING please read

I have just spoken to the vet. She still doesn't know which way things will go. He is not to bad in himself but his liver is damaged. It wont be clear for a few days if the damage will stop in time. If not it gets to a point were there are blood clotting problems. If it looks like this is going to happen he will have to go to Liverpool for specialist help and have a blood transfusion. He is getting all the supportive help possible, but really it is in the lap of the gods.
Thanks so much for your concern and prayers. It means a lot to me.

    Re: Xylitol WARNING please read

I have just spoken with the vet and she is cautiously optimistic. The liver damage is slowing down which is good news. Hopefully he will have enough healthy liver left to function properly. I'll keep you posted.

And thanks so much for caring, it's much appreciated

Linda, thanks for the update. Brack is beautiful (he looks like a Schipperke) and we're all keeping our fingers, toes, claws and wings crossed for him.

I really want to thank you for posting that information. I have two dogs myself and although I have never heard of xylitol, it's very good to know.

Again, best to you and Brack. You're in our thoughts.

    Re: Xylitol WARNING please read

He isn't out of the woods yet, but his chances are better than they were.
I have spoken with the North Wales Daily Post and I think they will run a story on whats happened. People need to know how dangerous xylitol is for dogs. Higher Nature are in the process of deciding wether/what to put on their xylitol packets as they have had other people contacting them too. . . I guess that means more dogs have been needlessly suffering as well. I am trying to spead the warning.

I'll post later when I have spoken again to the vet. She says he is being so good, he lets them do all the proding and poking necessary without any fuss.

If good wishes heal, he will make a full recovery! Thank you

Thanks Linda. Brack is a very brave and handsome fellow. As Karen said, We're pulling for you!

I'm very grateful that you are spreading the word. I researched xylitol and found it is in a few products here in NA. I'm so sorry the information had to come out this way.

Keep strong, Brack! Doggy kisses back to you.

    Re: Xylitol WARNING please read

Things are pretty much the same. The damage is still slowing which is good. It will probably be early next week before he can have the test to see how much functioning liver is left. . . so it is going to be a long wait.

    Re: Xylitol WARNING please read

I have been on the comp today sending emails to various TV programmes like sky news, bbc, gmtv, Watchdog etc hoping they will do something that will raise awareness and get the manufacturers to put warnings on the products.

I have also started an email (to be forwarded) to help get the message out across the web. If you want a copy pm me your email and I will forward one to you. (I won't save it or use it for anything else)

Brack is feeling much better in himself and he has come off the drip today, though he will still be monitored very closely. It is worrying that even though he doesn't look to bad, that we still won't know the outcome till he has the liver function test next week.
