    Making A Shower Perch?

I was wondering if anyone knew a way to make a small shower perch. I know you can buy them but the prices seem a bit excessive for what they are, lol. I've seen lots of people with small pvc pipe perches suction cupped to windows and stuff and was wondering if they were homemade or bought? If anyone knows of a way i could make my own shower perch i'd really appreciate it!

They would be soooooo easy to make. I assume that like here in Canada, Australia also has hardware or better yet, plumbing fixture stores. Buy the suction cup, attachment, and whatever fittings of pvc pipe that you want (they slide into each other). If needed you can use a non toxic aquarium caulking to seal the seams. Smooth off any excess so the bird won't pick at it. And finally make sure the suction is large and strong enough to support the birds weght.

How do you attach the suction cup? That's been the one thing that i can't work out. Other than that i figuired it would be easy peasy!

I have a store bought shower perch and the way they attach the suction cups was by making a slot on each end of the bar that they suction cup slides onto, though I don't know if all suction cups are made with that nub at the end or what.

Other than that just need to wrap the perch with something that won't be slippery

I used stainless steel screws to attach the suction cups.

So do you guys actually take your birds under the running water? I've heard of showering with your bird but don't want to hurt him.

Mine sit up on the soap holder (i put a cloth over it to keep them away from the soapyness) and then i let them hop on my hands if they wanna splash in the spray from the shower. They love it. I was thinking of finding a suction cuppy shampoo rack to use instead of making a shower perch.

yes my birds go under the water
the drops kinda just sit there on them
i make a carousel motion ...as if theyre on a roundabout going in and out of the water ..i dont put them under the water all the time but pass them thru it in a circular motion
they sit with their heads up and their eyes close and they seem to love it

    Re: Making A Shower Perch?

Anyone with a suggestion as to the making of a shower perch that would support the weight of a full grown Catalina Macaw when wet. I swear she weighs a ton!! I would not trust a suction cup device to withstand the weight. Right now I just get in with her and support her weight on my arm but it starts burning before she's done showering....LOL

    Re: Making A Shower Perch?

well they have those shower perches for large birds, Beeks. I dont know how they are. I geuss you wanted to make one right? since you on this thread obviously. anyway i would go with what jane said, make some sort of stand. Do you know around how much your macaw weighs when wet?

    Re: Making A Shower Perch?

Yes I've seen the ones for larger birds but they still don't look to me as if they would support her when wet. Plus my shower walls are a formica type material that feels slightly porous, like a formica counter top. I will check the local irrigation store that sells PVC and see if any of the workers have suggestions. Thanks for the help though.
