    Possible pet?

So I've been thinking (Usually a good thing but we'll see about that) I have been looking at the different types of pet birds but have only been noticing the parrots. I totally forgot you could have chickens and doves and such for pets (Duh, Elaine, I mean it's not like you don't see "My dove or pigeon" threads anywhere now do you?).

So, I was wondering if there are any "other" birds that make good (cuddly, interactive etc.) pets.

Before I go and research that is. I only know doves, pigeons, chickens, and ducks... I don't know if there are any others but before I go and research I'd like to know which are "cuddly".

And my idea of cuddly is WANTS to be pet, maybe held. It can also be independant like an eclectus. I don't mind velcro or noise either. It also is interactive so you can play with it..etc.

Chickens if raised from chicks are very cuddly. I had many of them and the ones raised from chicks would fly up to my shoulder and run up to me for pets they would also eat food out of my hand. Ducks aren't really cuddly most of them are skiddish. Doves from what I hear are very easy to tame (pigeons too) I prefer pigeons they come in alot more colors and varieties including the beautiful indian fantail.

I think the more intelligant birds are the one's that require more attention from us humans. Have you thought of the crow like birds? Magpie, Mynah bird, etc? They are very smart. I have no idea of the cuddle factor though!
My ducks aren't hand tame. But they still follow me about and will take food from my hand. They really are cute! Not sure they are really what you are looking for though. They aren't bothered at all if I'm not there! And their huge squirty poos mean indoor birds they are not! LOL.

    Re: Possible pet?

I used to keep pigeons and of all the ones that I hand-raised, the only one that ever stayed super-tame was an adult wild pigeon that I rescued. Go figure. She would sit on my shoulder, preen my hair and let me pet her. The other pigeons I had didn't ever seem to want any interaction from me other than at feeding time. Pigeons can be a lot smarter than people think... I am really quite a big fan of them, but I'm not sure that they're a good bet for a cuddly bird.

    Re: Possible pet?

Hehe, i love chickens. I'll probably end up having some as pets considering I hate their meat and don't like eggs. I'll also look into doves and pigeons but so far the only websites are the breeding and homing pigeond stuff. Nothing about keeping them as true pets.

I think for certain birds like those, you might need a permit depending on where you live. And usually theres like a limit. So just be aware of that. =)

    Re: Possible pet?

I know there's often permits involved. I am sre that out where we live now a chicken would be allowed...

Um, Bird Lover, Dogs are not for me. I am a cat fanatic (despite being allergic to them) and dogs have a creepy unconditional love and obeying thing that creeps me out. They also scare me since I was bitten around the eye by a little white one... not fun.

    Re: Possible pet?

i had a pair of geese and what a fine time we had
they were intelligent and loyal and loving
id be sunbaking on the sunlounge and thed come and wrap their long necks round my arm or head and give me goosey hugs..theyd kinda tremble as they did this
and they followed me and dad around like the dogs
my german shepherd would round them up at night so we could put them into the shed til the morning
    they were excellent watchdogs
but calm with anyone who was invited in
their droppings were not messy nor squirty like ducks
we got them from a farm in dural in sydney here they were just tiny goslings at the time
    they lived about 15 years

    Re: Possible pet?

In Poland, we had about 20 pigeons. They weren't hand tame, but were really trained. We could take them up to 20 miles away from our house, and they would always fly back! That is pretty neat, but its hard work!
